Defending

I just played the PS2 version of PES3 with my mate the other night. My mate is much of a dribbler and I find it very hard to stop him when he dribbles without giving him a freekick. Sometimes he can go all the way through the midfield and defence leaving all my players behind. I do not see my friend as a PES3 genius (he doesnt even have the game himself) so I am pretty sure I must be doing something wrong when I defend.

So... how do you guys keep your dribbling-buddies from scoring? 'cause I really wanna kick his ... :f***:

thanks

Right first of all if ur infront of him don't hold the dash button, then when he is not too far away from u press X. Hope that helps

ahhh... maybe thats it... I seem to press the dash button (L1 right?) all the time when I defend... does that make my defending weaker - I thought the players would just run faster?

Yup, lay off it when defending. You'll see you player will be much more balanced as opposed to him leaning and sprinting everywhere.

I always press and hold X until you are very close to the attacker.

Another thing to prevent him running passed everybody is organizing your defense well with L1. (With L1 you switch players to control)
When an attacker passes the middle of the pitch I will not press him immediately, but I move midfielders to good defensive positions, making spaces very tight to dribble. If he is about halfway my half I start to press using X (I rarely use sliding), which is later than most other players do. Apart from making things tight for him, you provoke him to come forward, leaving spaces for a counter-attack behind his defense ;)

when pressing a player bring in another defender to nick the ball away from him. think its square, or whatever isn't slide tackle. just hold it down and another player will come into help, makes it a lot harder to dribble past your whole team.

Make sure you don't leave holes in your defence by over-using the [] button though, a good player will spot this style of defence and will have an OM player hanging about near the empty areas while he attacks via a different path.

Using the [] button will cause defence to leave their line, all he then has to do is whip the ball to the center and there could be a nice gap for the OM or CF to exploit.

My favorite form of defence is to make sure your back 4 don't go far off their lines (use the defence setup screen to set the style of defence and man-marking). When under attack, move your highlighted player so he blocks any path to the goal for the forward (keep your man between a line from the attack and the goal, and also try to limit his options on passing), hopefully forcing the forward to either pass or make a hopeful run.

If the forward commits himself to a run on goal you have a chance here to use X (and [] if he's limited his options to a straight attack) to do a number of things.. Your defender could take the ball, or block a shot, or simply crowd the attacker out.

If you end up in a goalmouth scramble (heart failure time!), then throw bodies at the ball, they'll do a good job to block anything, but use X to clear as soon as you can, unless you are confident enough to pass the ball out and go for a break

Thanks for the advice. I will try all of this.

When you say "throw bodies at the ball" ... you don't mean sliding tackles or do you? Because sliding tackles almost always rewards my mate with a penalty...

I will try your 4 player defence line setup although I usually play with 3 defenders and two defensive midfielders...

No just try standing between the attacker and the goal. If he tries to shoot you will probably deflect the ball.

If it is a good dribbler i back off until i am in a good position to get the ball, it is important that you are patient and dont go rushing in, i mean if you are in front of him he is less likely to rush past you where as if you go sliding in then that could leave a massive space behind, you so this way it is better to restrict him to long range shots or force him down the wing and block the crosses

If he is making a mad dash into your box and you cant catch him try bringin out your GK by holding down /\ . Time it so that just as he enters the box he will get tackled by the keeper.

When there's a goalmouth scramble there's not usually enough time to plan a mode of defence. But hopefully if your playing like people have suggested then you'll still have two or three defenders in the box, and in good defensive positions.

If it's close to the goal you *know* that the attacker will try a shot at some point. In this situation I think it's ok to use the X & [] as your players will quickly close the attacker down and ruin his chances!

If he takes a shot here then you want your players close to him (and goal side) as they will throw themselves in the path of the shot in an attempt to block it. It looks damn good on a replay :) I think giving them high defensive levels helps here.

Having said that though, they'll still stand about like a bunch of charlies sometimes! :) Make sure your defenders are fit and enthusiastic ;)

What I do is use the double pressure? button -> [].

A way of getting around potential weak empty spot when doing so is letting the second defender chase the dribbler while you position yourself back(almost in a sweeper position). Now you can prevent him from making passes that break your defense.
While your other defender is giving the dribbler a hard time.

man marking helps a lot..............i'm sorry but if everytime u slide tackle and u foul u must be **** at the game............time ure tackles...........cuz foulin makes players look amateur..............

I will try to time my tackles better ;)

About the keeper rushout feature /\:

Do any of you experience that when you are aplying pressure using the [] and the X buttons and you want your keeper to rush out at the sametime using /\, your chasing defenders will often go into reckless sliding tackles instead of keeping up the pressure? (I dont touch the sliding tackle button...)
