Dear Iceboy...

Dear friend

I have downloaded the beta drivers for my geforce 2 (the 12.41). How do I install, there seems to be no self exe file.Do I have to extract them somewhere? Will there be a big increase in perfrmance or is it just slight improvements on older drivers? I suppose NVIDIA "release" these just to see how they work? Or is that me being innocent!!!

Peace love and ta for anyhelp mate!

start menu ---->control panel ---->System---->device manager-----> display adaptor---->geforce 2 (the 12.41). ---->driver---->update driver---->next---->search--->specify location .... then just follow the prompts to the correct path to the *.inf file..and you hammered 6 past us in our last encounter, snivel ...Ned

whoops, forgot this smidge, if you drivers are in a zip file, just extract em to a spare\temp dir and then just follow the above instructions, and if the drivers need updating it should kick em in for you ..

Ned: That is not the correct procedure(or rather half correct) in the video world :p

Here my method, which will ensure nothing will go wrong.(espeicially if you have 3d revelators and it won't work with Ned's proceure)

1) Extract your zip file to a folder
2) Go to control panel -> add/remove program
3) Uninstall Nvidia Display drivers or your vendor's(Elsa, Asus, creative, hercules..etc) display driver (if you can't find, skip to step 5)
4) The pc will ask for a reboot, but don't.
5) type "regedit" in start menu-> run... and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and delete the key of NVIDIA corperation. (skip if not found)
6) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> Class and delete the Display key (skip if not found)
7) Normally I skip this step but might as well tell you the correct procedure incase it doesn't work if you don't skip.
Boot into safe mode, search for nv*.* in windows and windows/system folder and delete them. <- troublesome but skipping still works with Elsa 3d revelator!
8) Reboot your computer as normal, windows will find new hardware. Then when there is a screen asking you to search for new drivers or otherwise, click the "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want..." Click next
9) click Have disk... click to the folder you unzipped the file you downloaded and click ok.
10) Reboot when asked, change the colours to 16 bit if your colour is in 16 colors. Reboot when asked and in display -> Settings tab -> Advanced... You can find a lot of tabs!
Download Nvmax(recomended) from www.nvmax.com to tweak your driver.(overclock, Geforce 3 emulation to run some geforce 3 demos..etc) ...End

11) right click on desktop -> properties -> Settings -> Adaptor change -> next -> Then when there is a screen asking you to search for new drivers or otherwise, click the "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want..." Click next
click Have disk... click to the folder you unzipped the file you downloaded and click ok. go to step 10.

Sorry but ...your method will cause problems for someone who had been using their brand's drivers. And if you noticed, the display registry will always make new ones if you keep doing that, Display->0000, 0001, 0002..etc. This causes some tweak programs not to work.(although that is the programmer's fault :p)

This part has me baffled, why do you go through all this hassle to install updated drivers, an update .. 'updates' and overwrites the older set up, and why bother with tweak programs when you run either a 32 or 64 meg accelerator card, whenever i have updated a video card\drivers, there are absolutely no references or needs to go anywhere near the win reg, or go through the pointless excercise of booting in safe mode, if the video card that you are using is 100% secure and the driver updates are 100%, it all should configure ok once that you have done the necessary install .. the safest way that i have found, is to simply uninstall the older drivers and then reboot and follow the prompts to install the newer ones, i have done it way that i mentioned in the previous post and the uninstall first method and everything worked out just fine ... Removing the regedit keys in regedit: help to enable stereo in stereo 3D glasses(in case someone had them and does not work now) Uninstalling might not remove the keys.

Boot into safe mode: I didn't do that if you read properly, some Nvidia fan sites recommend that though. That's why I type that. If i need to delete the files, i use ms-dos but i doubt members here know how to use that. And if any problems crop up, might try this step.

Tweaking: Without tweaking tools, can you use NV20emulate so you can run Gf3 demos? SBA? Force AGP 1x 2x, 4x? Enable Athlon and windows 2000 fix for nvidia owners? Enable TNT2 compatiblity mode to DISABLE T&L so that stereo works in old Elsa stereo drivers for opengl?
Enable intel compatiblity? Enable Triple buffering in Opengl? Enable Dxt compression which fixes the Quake 3 skies for example? Enable DirecX Video Acceleration? Enable texture compression in D3d? Enable fastwrites? Enable Geforce Accelerate Lines to speed up programs like 3Dmax studio?
Tweaking doesn't mean improve speed. Tweaking also can improve stability and quality. Why don't you download and find out more by yourself?

*Groan* Anyway we shouldn't discuss graphics cards here. I think I got a bit carried away. Sorry to everyone who thinks so too.(including Ned if I offended you)

Iceboy, you never offended anyone with your info, it is info that should be gladly accepted by players who need to know the tricks and traps of setting up video displays, i missunderstood what you was meaning in regard to tweaking, i was thinking about 'fast clocking' for some reason or another.. i downloaded the Revelator software and find it to be a very interesting, erm..'capture' .. now i need a pair of those 3d optics to see it all in full bloom .. Fifa 2001 looks wierd at the moment without them .. ... Ned
