arsene wenger on beckhams move:

Arsene Wenger has already weighed in on the Beckham-to-the-States move. And frankly, I’m a bit surprised at all of the hubbub surrounding the move. It’s not often that a football story appears on USA morning shows as it did today.

Anyway, the Gunner boss mostly states the obvious, noting that it will take more than Posh’s husband to set football alight in America.

“Football will only take off (in America) if Beckham’s not the only one. You need a few. Is that the opening road for more to come? If you want a real influx of big stars that’s what will be needed if you want to create a big lift for American football. One player will not be enough.”

And yet:

“On the other hand it can give a big boost to American football because they now have a basis. They had no elite and to have great players like David Beckham in the professional league can give a big boost.”

I hadn't heard of that but I wouldn't be surprised if he did say it. Alexi is known for making some ridiculous comments to the media. He claims he does it on purpose, to create controversy and put MLS in the news. But he just comes out looking like a total Carlos*ass.

"We're going to make New York the league's first super club."

When he took a "sip" from that empty can of Red Bull (H).

At least I can say that my club, while far from "super", has been to MLS Cup. As for actually winning the f*cking thing, the less said the better.

He forgot to mention that it was 1,000 season tickets in the first 4 hours after Beckham signing. I believe it was 2,000 season tickets in one day. For season tickets sold in one day, that is ******* a lot, especially in US.

Can anyone imagine a Boca vs. River game at this stadium?

It would be hell house for cops.

SouthAfrica fan: You are an arrogant jerk.

The thing about "The Big House" is that only the top 30 or 35 rows are above ground. When you see it on the outside it looks like it's nothing, then you get inside and just keep walking down and down and down and when you look back up it's insane. Because of the design, it could also conceivably expand to an unprecedented capacity. I'm talking 150,000+.

If Pele wasn't able to built a soccer oving mentality in this country, i on't see becks doing it.

those were different times indeed...Soccer is a lot more mainstream today in North America. I remember even like 10 years ago around here, nobody knew who guys like Zidane, Figo, etc were...nowadays even non soccer fans generally have heard of the big names. Besides, there were some good years for soccer in North America during those Pele days. Attendance was good and the NASL was pretty popular, it was over-expansion to markets that couldn't support a franchise that eventually killed it. Anyhow, I don';t think Beckham is supposed to be the saviour of soccer in America when he comes to MLS, his signing will be a positive thing though, but he obviously can't do that alone. That's gonna take time, but hopefully having an MLS team sign a player of his calibre will start things rolling..

I just spent a week in the US and Beck's transfer was still making the papers, and not just the sports section. I also overheard several people talking about it, again that would have been unheard of a decade ago.

Yeah, absolutely, the difference between NASL and MLS is that MLS was growing at a decent rate even without Beckham, while NASL was pretty much non-existent before Pele and it totally disappeared after Pele. The popularity and growth level are way too different.

A Michigan alum got really pissed at me when I said the Big House had no redeeming features outside of it's massive size.

I still think it's one of the more boring stadiums in America. It almost looks like they pulled it (sans a running track) out of Eastern Europe circa 1971.
