Bayern sign Dutch left-back Edson Braafheid




The signing of Braafheid and the near-complete deal for Pranjic offer Bayern more alternatives at full-back. Both players, fresh from successful campaigns for their clubs in the Dutch first division last term, are comfortable in the left-back berth. That in turn would allow Germany international Philipp Lahm to revert to the right side of the field. Bayern are short of options at right-back following the departures of Willy Sagnol and Massimo Oddo.

Braafheid left Utrecht in 2007 to join Twente, who finished runners-up to Van Gaal’s AZ Alkmaar side last term. He made a total of 76 appearances for the Enschede club, scoring once. He won the first of two Netherlands caps on 11 February this year in a 1-1 friendly draw with Tunisia. Braafheid was previously a member of the Dutch U-21 team which cruised to the 2006 European championship title.
