College Soccer - Anyone?

Not sure if anyone is interested in this, but does anyone play college soccer here or follow it?

Right now I play for West Texas A&M. We are a NCAA Division II side and will hopefully be ranked within the top 25 teams in the nation as we beat the #10 team not too long ago.

I used to play for a local University. Our record was 20-2-1 but then I got dumb and joined the military. I haven't played since I got out. I seriously miss it

Yeah, that's where it is. What's your cousins name and does he play soccer?

Sanel, I am a freshmen and play about one half every game. Sometimes more but sometimes less. There's about 25 quality players on the team so it's tough to start as a freshman. I could have gone to other places and started but I chose to come here because the team is better.

College soccer is the next level from high school and club. It's tougher therefore and you need to play a lot faster and be stronger. If you are a good player in club or high school and you have good skill, you should be OK in the skill field, but the change is speed of play and physicality is much greater. I suggest you get into the gym and start playing with some older people who like to foul when they play and who play a lot faster. It will get you ready for the next level.

Where are you planning on going?

Well done Adi (Y)

My brother goes to Cornell and hes a really good player. He plays for them.

Hopefully next year ill play for whatever college i go to :D.

Im going to East Stroudsburg Uni. to play soccer next season. From what I have been told they are one of the best Div II teams in the country. And their intramural league is very popular, student teachers who were on the team have told me that they have around 20 teams of 15 players, thats how popular soccer is there. He compared their Intramural program to a high school varsity level league, and their College varsity to semi-pro. I went with my coach and a few of the other seniors to check out their pre-season.......and the only way I may be able to handle it is if I get into the best shape of my life.......so I gotta get working.

So Sanel, like Coon said, skill wise, if you got some skill, and your strong on and off the ball you may do OK, but the fitness aspect is nothing like Varsity, from what I have seen anyway, it looks 20X worse.

I was just wonderin... I don't really understand the fitness requirements for playing at a pro/college level.

Do you gotta buff or shlt, or work out 24/7?

I'm not involved in any other sports. I don't go to gym, I don't play on any team, I dont' work out.

Guess from that description you'd assume I'm fat or shlt.

Hehehhehe, No. I play on my own. I practice all the technical aspects of the game. Run on my own. I've got some skillz. Before I moved here to the U.S, I used to play regularly. Was the best on the block.

My fitness ain't good at the moment. It would prolly take me a while to work on my stamina, etc. But give me the ball, I'll work my magic.

So, for colleges, do they look at the SKILLS or FITNESS / physical attributes first?

well, then get running! If I were you I would play Intramurel before trying out for the varsity, to refresh the basic skills, and get some match fitness.

Thanks Mikey, and good luck to you next year.

Regarding fitness, it's different depending on what school you go. Every coach is slightly different but even with that in mind you have to run more than in high school or club. I had to report to preseason a month before school started. We had to wake up at 6 AM and go running, then had another session at 11 and then another one at 6 in the evening. This went on for about 3 weeks. It was a lot of fitness work so that you can get in really good shape.

College soccer is tougher and involves a lot more running. If you don't want to run, then you won't play... it's as simple as that. You have to be up and down the field at all times and there is no time to just stand around and get a breather. It's just too risky at this level.

Our team hasn't worked out in the gym yet. We won't do that until Spring, when our season is over. Over the summer though, you should try and lift some weight so that you can be stronger on the ball... it's for your own good after all.

what about div 3 soccer? i dont think that i am good enough for div 2 but i still would like to continue my soccer career. is there a huge difference between div 1 and div2 , and between div 2 and div 3?

some of the schools that i am looking at are division 3, so it got me thinking about soccer.

curious, how fast can you run 2 miles? our coach told us that our goal was 12 minutes, is that slow compared to you guys?

There isn't that much difference between D2 and D3. A D2 coach tried to recruit me, but I decided to go with a D3 team because the coach knew me and the atmosphere was a lot better. My D3 team beat that same D2 team 4-1 later that year.
