CL: Liverpool v Benfica (P+R)

We were a bit lucky not to be thrashed by 4-1, or something like that...

But great defensive display by the team, especially from Luisão :rockman: , Léo and Manuel Fernandes... nice performance by Geovanni and Simão also played very well, and Miccoli proved that when in-form, he is our main striker...

 Gerrard = Super-machine

Anyways...... força Benfica!!!!!!!!!!!! :lui:

Argh, not even a single goal? :nape:

Congrats to all Benfiquistas. Wouldnt be bad to see you guys winning the whole thing, very charismatic team. I dont think that will happen tho, especially with all mighty Milan and Barça around, not to mention Juve.

Well I haven't posted here in years probably...

But, I have to say that we probably aren't giving LIVERPOOL enough credit here...

We were VERY lucky not to let in 3 or 4 goals in the first half.

Our defence played well but we were letting them get long crosses onto the heads of their forwards who would flick into the box, leaving our central defence SCRAMBLING.... I was REALLY hoping Anderson and Luisao would adapt and stop letting them jump on our backs for height or at least step in front of them. But no.. all day just jump from behind them... that's never going to work.

Either way we got lucky and we have to remember that..

2 posts.. one great save... and a horrible shot over the post by .. whoever that was... you all know what i'm talking about.

That's 4 goals it could have been in the first half... it could have been VERY different.

Most of all I was dissapointed in the headers being won by LIVERPOOL all day on the edge of the box.. that caused SO many problems and we didn't adapt and that's a little sad, but I admire Benfica's fight and dedication in not giving up on the plays.

The other thing that got me really angry was how much space we gave them in midfield... in the first leg every time anyone in liverpool even TOUCHED the ball he had 3 or 4 benfica players SWARMING all over him... then we took off on a counter...

This time we backed up a little more... let them curl in those long balls to the box or the edge.. and like I said... if we did a better job clearing those I would have been happy with that.. but we didn't do that well and almost payed for it.

SO PROPS to LIVERPOOL who I would say outplayed us but sometimes HEART and DETERMINATION and LUCK does win a game as well.

Last thing.... BETO.. please... bench this guy.. I'd say I really loved the line up today.. just SWITCH BETO FOR PETIT and I'd be very happy...

Then use MR. GREECE (karagounis or however you spell that) as the main sub.

Also Don't forget about Ricardo Rocha.. very good sub for defence as well at LEAST.. if not starting here and there.

Ok I write too much.. oh PS.. i'm a HUGE BENFICA fan, but I like to keep things real...

CIAO!! :ewan:

we missed Petit's tranquility and experience in front of the defence a lot in the first half.

However, the team got much more confident in the 2nd half and Liverpool didn't even threaten us much.

Still Liverpool had some very good plays in the 1st half that could have easily finished in goals. We had the luck of the game yesterday even if the ref screwed us a bit with those fake offsides.

I wouldn't say they outplayed us, we did the game we were supposed to. Being up 1 - 0 we were bound to defend and counterattack, like Liverpool did so well in last year's CL. They did look threatning for the first half hour, breaching our defence for 3 or 4 times but afterwards they didn't really do much with the ball.

I also think our midfield is much more solid with the trio Petit - Manuel Fernandes- Karagounis. Koeman took a big risk yesterday in playing Nuno Gomes in the midfield who doesn't defend much and Geovanni upfront.

That added with Robert being his usual lazy crap self.

Karagounis had an instant impact when he came on. Great player he is. Carlos of all trades kind of player, knows how to defend, holds the ball very well, good vision, smart passing.

:) I agree with a lot of what you said.

We did miss Petit very much and with him in we could have probably done well in the first half hour.

I'll switch my outplayed outright to outplayed in the first 30 minutes which could have and almost was enough to end up losing the whole thing :)

We DID play the game we were supposed to though I agree 100 percent there, just took us a little long to get into the groove and yes we missed Petit, and should have started Karagounis for BETO which would have alost helped dramatically.

I would always start GOMES up front.. and I like having geovanni and robert up front as well for options on counters.. etc... although you can swap geovanni or robert for Micolli if you wish.. as long as you let gomes cherry pick :) up front.

I guess if i had to pick a line up... same Back four as today.. Your trio midfield ... Simao and GOMES up front with (Geo, Micolli, or Robert).

Taking into consideration the kind of formation Benfica play of course..

I miss MIGUEL so much in Right Back.

BENFICA!!!!!! :rockman:

I'm really really glad! I must confess I would have never believed beforehand that we would beat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. The team showed an enormous fighting spirit and concentration. We had luck on our side, which is always necessary.

The two goals were amazing, pure magic by Simão and Miccoli. Our defense was pretty solid, apart from a few errors made especially in the first 25 minutes of the 1st half. In my opinion, Anderson was yesterday even better than Luisão, he made several incredible tackles and interceptions.

I also think people are being unfair with Beto. He played well yesterday. Yes, he did screw up sometimes, but most of the time he played simple and was very strong defensively. He also didn't miss many passes and, as always, played with an enormous heart. Let's not forget he was even involved in the play were we got our 2nd goal. I keep what I always thought about him: he's a useful player, but he needs to do what he's best at (destroying) and when attacking resort to simple things and not try to invent as he often does. Koeman needs to make him see this. It doesn't make any sense to me saying he's probably the worst player in the Portuguese league, because everyone that followed his career in Portugal knows he was always one of the best players in Paços and Beira-Mar. The main thing, obviously, is that there's a huge difference between playing in low level teams and in Benfica. One thing that has surprised me and that shows he still hasn't played with full confidence for us is that he almost never tries long shots and when he does they are harmless, when for Paços and Beira-Mar he scored several amazing "bombs".

From now on, I can't ask anything more of our team than to keep honouring the shirt. They've already done brilliantly to reach here and from this point things will get even harder. Anyway, we can dream, can't we? ;)

P.S. The Anfield crowd was great, always supporting their team and showed and enormous fair-play in the end. Big props to them!

One of the players that impressed me most yesterday is Moretto. I thought it was the first time since coming over from Setubal that he actually looked like a worthwhile signing. Made some crucial saves, gathered crosses, always looked relaxed and confident..

'm still not convinced of Beto's performance yesterday, maybe I judge him too hard but I saw a player that loses possesion often, gains possesion then quickly gives the ball back, makes unnecessary hard tackles, etc.. Ok, he might not be the worst, but any ordinary DM in Portugal could do the same job as he does.

Laurent Robert was the worst for me though. He was a complete non-factor in the game and we produced nothing on the right wing which made our counters a bit predictable, especially in the first half.

Nuno Gomes, out next match. Does anyone even care at this point? He was very poor yesterday too.

Anderson, Leo, Luisao ---> rock solid.

Anderson was a beast yesterday. In relation to Nuno Gomes, beware of that assessment. Some ppl don´t give him the right credit (i´m biased cause i like him and will be forever grateful for his goal against Spain). His movements and versatility are very important in the team and his years of experience (Top Nt/club competitions plus Serie A spell) make him a very valuable player. You often see him talking to his collegues and his influence on the team is notorious. I sincerily think that a depleted Benfica without Nuno Gomes is a weaker team. But i don´t know this year, your campaign has been remarkable. Against Manchester without half of the team, against Liverpool without Petit and you always manage to overcome the odds. Perhaps Nuno Gomes absence won´t be missed but i clearly think that he is a valuable member.
Whatever happened to Rami? I´m curious about his input (this is not a wind up, honestly).

I'm a big fan of Nuno Gomes too, I just think that at this stage of the CL, with all the powerhouse clubs left we're going to be defending a lot, almost always. So I think since most of our chances are going to come from counters, Miccoli is a far more effective player in that situation.

I was busy yesterday, so I hadnt the chance to see the match or even highlights of it, but when you cant score in two legs you cant hope for a good outcome...now Liverpool have to focus on that 2nd PL place and the FA Cup.
Congrats to Benfica.

hilarious

i liked the part of "simpáticos ingleses"

Villarreal, Man Utd e Liverpool não são equipas a sério (mas não nos iam cilindrar?). o colosso Halmstads é que é. está-se sempre a aprender nesses fóruns.
