Vieri ends Inter association
Friday, 1 July 2005

FC Internazionale Milano have parted company with Italian international forward Christian Vieri.

Mutual consent
The striker's contract, tying him to the Serie A side until 30 June 2006, was today cancelled by mutual consent. An Inter statement read: "The negotiations were handled in the most friendly way and took into consideration the needs of both the player and the club. We thank Christian Vieri for the six seasons he spent here and for writing a very good chapter in Inter's history."

Century of goals
Australian-raised Vieri, 32 later this month, joined Inter in 1999 from S.S. Lazio, having previously played for Atalanta BC, Juventus FC and Club Atlético de Madrid. With the Nerazzurri he scored more than 100 goals in Serie A, including 13 in 27 games last season as Inter finished third to earn another UEFA Champions League campaign and won the Coppa Italia.

International ambition
Vieri, who has 22 goals in 45 international appearances, is yet to announce his new club but has left Inter to ensure regular first-team football in the hope of securing his place in Italy's side for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Where do you think he'll end up?

Oh, c'mon now, bro. What have you got against 'em? I thought that you'd be very happy with the link, I mean, he is > your hero Shevchenko, isn't he? Better season/game goalscoring average with nowhere near the midfield support that Sheva has been blessed with through out his career.

Thats not the point, the point is that if Milan get him, Gilardino wont come to Milan :(

This is very odd, but also very Inter Milan management-esque. I hear that we're paying a substantial amount of money to him for the cancellation of the last year of his contract.......was he that despised by the club that they couldn't even muster up the energy to sell 'em off for some price, any price? Why continue to pay him while he plays elsewhere (potentially still in the Serie A) to bag tons of revenge goals against you?

Hopefully he signed a clause where it's stipulated that he cannot sign for an Italian team or something.

Souness Steps Up Striker Search

GRAEME Souness remains determined to strengthen his striking department at Newcastle United despite seeing inquiries for Christian Vieri and Alan Smith come to nothing.

Speaking exclusively to nufc.co.uk, the Magpies boss confirmed he had made inquiries for the pair but revealed neither will be coming to St. James' Park.

Vieri became a free agent today after leaving Inter Milan by mutual consent, and Souness admits he tried to bring him to Tyneside, only to discover the bustling forward is keen on another spell in Spain's La Liga having previously played for Atletico Madrid.

He revealed: "We did inquire about Christian Vieri. I got a mutual friend to have a word with the player, but it appears he wants to go to Spain."

Newcastle have also been linked with a move for Manchester United's Alan Smith, and Souness said of the England international: "We made an inquiry for Alan Smith also, but were told there is nothing doing."

The United manager has the bulk of his senior squad back for training on Monday, but it's clear he's working hard to bring high-calibre personnel to St James' before the 2005-06 campaign kicks off.

And if and when any new faces do arrive, you can be sure of one thing - it will be reported first on the official website.

As Graeme Souness says himself: "If you want to know the news first, then this is the only website to come to."

That's not what I'm hearing. Supposedly all his bonuses and the major portion of his wage would be paid in the final season of his contract and the thing was annulled beforet that could happen. I'm guessing the club probably did pay some cash to get rid of him, but in the end the club undoubtably saved cash by doing so. No club would have signed him with his high wage especially with him being 32. It just wouldn't have happened. Now with him off the wage bill the club can continue to move forward and have time to look for a replacement.

Overall I'm glad he left, but I didn't want it to be this way. Oh well. If he signs with Milan I'll actually be glad, then they won't get Gila. If Inter sign him instead that would be hilarious.

BTW according to Inter legend Altobelli he thinks Vieri will join Milan, and definately not Juve. I guess we'll find out soon enough. I wouldn't be surprised if he joined a Spanish side to get away from the Italian media.
