Chelsea make their move for Ferdinand

Daniel Taylor
Wednesday March 24, 2004
The Guardian

Manchester United have flatly turned down Chelsea's most audacious move in the transfer market to date - an approach for Rio Ferdinand.
Under specific instructions from Sir Alex Ferguson, and with the full backing of his board, United have also rejected the first overtures from some of Europe's leading clubs for the England defender.

Carlos Queiroz, Ferguson's former assistant at Old Trafford and now the coach of Real Madrid, was among those hoping to capitalise on Ferdinand's fall from grace, but a defiant Ferguson has assured the world's most expensive defender he will still be regarded as the mainstay of United's defence when he returns from an eight-month ban in September.

Whether that will be sufficient to prevent Chelsea following up their initial attempts remains unclear, but the London club have made it clear to Ferdinand's adviser Pini Zahavi that they have the money and desire to tempt him back to the capital.

Peter Kenyon, Chelsea's chief executive, has close links with Zahavi, cultivated from his time at Old Trafford, but the Israeli agent also has strong ties with Ferguson and has reported back to Stamford Bridge that the United manager will not be budged.

Ferdinand this week declared his intention to stay at United and "repay" them for the support they have offered since his missed drug test in September.

This could be a good business move.

As ManUtd might wanna get some money for a player that won't be playing for the next 7 months.
But I don't think he'll be going anywhere.

Am I the only one who remembers that before Rio got banned, a lot of people called him overrated!! He is good no doubts there, we miss him ALOT, but whether he is worth 30mil pounds that is the question. I even remember a few blunders from him at the beginning of the season, point is, he isn't perfect.

I suppose I'd rather him stay though. Sir Alex has not given fans much confidence about his ability to seal important transfer deals, he might miss Puyol or some other crucial defender, leaving us stranded.

If Ferg could bring in some other good defender(s) it might be a good business move. Let Chelsea pay through the nose and sit him on the bench for 7 months.

Team Captain
Ferdinand won't leave. I remember an article during the saga of his move saying he would only leave for Man. United.

United would be making a huge deal if they sold and got the 30 million back. Then they could go buy a proper defender. :p

I figure that if Rio is to be sold to Chelsea they would have to make some ridiculous offer, maybe 50 million, knowing Chelsea. Then it would be a good deal lol.:D

Its papertalk.

There is no reason to sell our best defender, we didn't sell Cantona when he was banned.

Selling Rio Ferdinand would just show how much ambition on the field Manchester United really have - absolutely none if they sell Ferdinand.

Ok, perhaps Rio was stupid to make an honest mistake.

But I doubt he is stupid enough to join Woman Abramovich's "Revolution".

Forget about it Chelsea. :ewan:

Well, if there was a rediculous offer for him, it might be wise to get rid of him, no matter how essential he can be for us.

he's not going anywhere , so quite useless this is.

Look how bad man utd have done without him. Thats how good he is, and anyone who says hes overrated is stupid.
