Chelsea make their move for Ferdinand

Manchester United have flatly turned down Chelsea's most audacious move in the transfer market to date - an approach for Rio Ferdinand.
Under specific instructions from Sir Alex Ferguson, and with the full backing of his board, United have also rejected the first overtures from some of Europe's leading clubs for the England defender.
Carlos Queiroz, Ferguson's former assistant at Old Trafford and now the coach of Real Madrid, was among those hoping to capitalise on Ferdinand's fall from grace, but a defiant Ferguson has assured the world's most expensive defender he will still be regarded as the mainstay of United's defence when he returns from an eight-month ban in September.
Whether that will be sufficient to prevent Chelsea following up their initial attempts remains unclear, but the London club have made it clear to Ferdinand's adviser Pini Zahavi that they have the money and desire to tempt him back to the capital.
Peter Kenyon, Chelsea's chief executive, has close links with Zahavi, cultivated from his time at Old Trafford, but the Israeli agent also has strong ties with Ferguson and has reported back to Stamford Bridge that the United manager will not be budged.
Ferdinand this week declared his intention to stay at United and "repay" them for the support they have offered since his missed drug test in September.
