You get rid of Di Matteo for Rafa Benitez? The Rafa Benitez that couldn't hack it at Inter?

Chelsea must really want that CWC, even if it means not winning anything else. (H)

Benitez is also Champions league, UEFA cup, Liga (twice), FA cup, supercoppa and club world cup champion.

I hope he can secure 3rd place and if we somehow advance in the CL get us a decent run. If he can make Torres good again I'll be glad, but I have no optimism about our future right now.

I loved the suspense of the wait for extra time. To be fair the ref was pretty bad.

I loved how with this gesture Mourinho made look like the draw a great score when actually prevented them from fighting for first place of the group (then has encouraged the fans saying he has won 2 CL finishing 2nd on the group stage). Madrid did enough to win the game though.

Welcome back Benitez! Never thought Chelsea was gonna be so desperate and sign Benitez. It can work but he has been crap in the last few years he managed. Chelsea is never gonna progress if the owner keep changing manager every 6 months. I think RDM was doing a pretty good job. Every manager goes through runs of bad form. Chelsea had a relatively tough UCL group. I don't think it was RDM's fault.

Di Matteo did a brilliant job last season changing team dynamics and optimizing resources (gave the leadership back to the old guard and played a football their players doesn't feel unnatural) but failied building an own project, he earned the chance and Roman did well though. I think i said in August the squad were not well made IMO, it lacks a competitive #9 and creativity at the base. Moses and Marin signings were weird, Essien shouldn't have gone on the last minute of the transfer window without a chance to replace him for another player and i don't understand why didn't you go for the likes of Cavani, Falcao, de Rossi or Moutinho.

Benitez obstacles at Inter, he hasn't had an easy job and working conditions:

- New league, culture and language
- Took the team after the greatest succes in their history
- Old squad not renewed
- Strong relationship between Mourinho and team leaders
- Moratti didn't signed him anything he asked for (Evra, Kuyt, Mascherano, Alexis) then Leonardo got 3 players on the winter window (Nagatomo, Pazzini, Kharja)...

Honestly, it's just a new squad not gelling, but that's just not an acceptable excuse I guess. Everyone knew Hazard and Oscar would take some time to be consistently great like everyone else who has come to the Prem, but they started off hot, so the new narrative was "NO ADJUSTMENT PERIOD FOR THESE STARS!"

You can't just buy a squad in the summer and win a title. A couple additions, okay, but a team needs to get to know each other before succeeding.

Part of the problem was that all 3 playmakers shined at differey times, and so RDM decided/was told to play them together. I think that Ramires or even Moses with the 3 playmakers rotating for two spots would have gotten better results. But we needed another CM for tgat, espe ially with Lampard's injury.

You see I dont know what to think because by and large I dont agree with any of the appointments since Ancelotti, but once they are appointed I want to get behind them if only because I want stability. I mean, the ideal of every club is the right manager for a long time, the right manager for a short time is frustrating because it sets a standard and an artificial expectation, so the next best thing probably is the wrong manager for a long time. However, what we have been getting (and Benitez I fear will be another) is the worst possible option, the wrong manager for a short time, which is just toxic. Yes Di Matteo won the Champions League but I honestly believe that had Abramovich appointed John Terry as player manager we would have won that trophy, that really was a case of "the manager who manages least manages best", but that is not viable in the long term. Now please please please please dont pick another dud in the summer and give whoever it is TIME.

Sure you can, Chelsea 04/05.

Ranieri bought in Robben, Cech before he was sacked. Jose brought in Drogba(who rotated with Gudjohnsen), Carvalho(who didn't start many games in the first season), Tiago and Ferreira.

Makelele, Duff, Bridge, Joe Cole, Glen Johnson, Mutu were other purchases by Ranieri who were involved before in the 03/04 season. Duff was the most expensive at 17mil.

The players that would make up the main core of the team were Gallas, Lampard, Gudjohnsen, and Terry were all established before Roman came in.

So Jose had plenty to work with at the beginning, he strengthened areas which were lacking like our fullbacks and striking force(after Jimmy Floyd and Crespo left ), but he certainly didn't buy the squad during the summer for the coming season.

Robben is so good. I can't believe Madrid sold him. I guess Chelsea were probably forced by his ambition, but Madrid are morons. I can't imagine how much of a legend he would be if he stayed in England because he got a LOT better at Madrid.

I don't care who buy the players, Chelsea started the 04/05 season with a lot of newcomers, new manager, new philosophy and new methodology but still succes. Cech, Terry, Drogba and Lampard became "stars" that season under Mourinho.

New managers come in and energize a team all the time. Guys who were complacent with their squad place now have to work hard to get the new manager to recognize it. As pointed out already, there weren't many newcomers in that squad.
