I've played FIFA 12 for some time now and I havent figured out one thing. When i've finished a season and can choose a new team, it says something about Managers Salary and I have no idea why this is important or how I can spend this money... in previous FIFA you could upgrade the stadium and staff, is this still possible or is the manager salary just a number with no meaning?

Yes, it's just a number based on your Manager's reputation, team's overall and league your team belongs to.
We can found manager's salary settings in joboffer.ini file (if installed Fidel's CM editor)
// Float that determines the weight of the reputation against the team overall.
// 0.0f means it all depends on the team overall and 1.0f that it all depends on the reputation.
WAGES_WEIGHT_REPUTATION = 0.75
// Wage multipliers based on the type of league the team belongs to.
WAGES_MULTIPLIER_TOP_FIRST_LEAGUES = 1.0
WAGES_MULTIPLIER_TOP_SECOND_LEAGUES = 0.40
WAGES_MULTIPLIER_MEDIUM_LEAGUES = 0.50
WAGES_MULTIPLIER_LOWER_LEAGUES = 0.15
WAGES_MULTIPLIER_ASIA_OCIANIA_LEAGUES = 0.20
But it's nothing to do with it. No stadiums or staff upgrade. Just for fun, isn't it?
