11th May 1985
Just gained promotion? Going to the celebration at the final home game?
That’s exactly what fellow supporters were doing on this day in 1985. Bradford City were due to take on Lincoln City in a promotion party 11,076 fans arrived in jubilation after the hard work of the previous 9 months was worth celebrating.
Sadly the celebrations were short lived, with only 40 minutes of the match gone a small fire was noticed underneath Block G of the main stand. Within minutes the fire was out of control and the evacuation began. The referee stopped play at 0-0. Due to the construction of the stand, mainly wood and asbestos, the stand collapsed within four minutes of the fire starting killed 56 fans and injuring hundreds more.
Much is heard of the tragedies at Ibrox, at Hillsborough and at Heysel, and the tradgedy at Bradford is often overlooked.
The Bradford fire speedily brought an end to unsafe, wooden stands. It took the needless deaths of 56 football supporters to wake up the Government and football authorities alike to the dangers of going too football matches.
Today we ask that you take time to remember the people that died, and all those who lost friends family and loved ones.
RIP, we shall never forget them.
