Blasted Mechanism

most likely those who live in Portugal know these guys, so i'm here more to present to everyone else the most original band i've ever seen.

Blasted Mechanism are nowhere near of anything that you may have heard before, i can assure you that. Not only they looks are crazy, as is their sound which is hard to categorize. A mix of electronic with rock, yet with many influences from many other music genres.

Each new released album represents a new generation, which comes with new looks, new sound but the same power as ever before. They are now at their 4th generation.

you can find more fotos here,
or fotos and videos at their official website.

Please post your thoughts about them. :)

Thanks Callan, where would this thread be without your great sense of humour.

bmpv666, it's funny you mention Blasted Mechanism because just today I was talking to my bro about how all sorts of crap english/american bands get played in our radios and yet a band as original as BM can't get across our borders, even though they're trying their hardest this year.

They've been playing shows across Europe and zero, nothing, apart those who went to their shows. Thing is, you either have the international dep. of your label behind you (to book you a decent world tour, to get your face on the major music mag covers, to distribute your records and merchandise, etc.) or you're done. And we know major labels only go for guaranteed success these days; it's a risk to put big bucks behind a band that leaves your jaw on the floor when you see them onstage, although I'm sure the risk would pay off in the end.

Hey, and you know what? I'm okay to talk about this band quite simply because... I'm not a fan. I give them a lot of praise, though, for trying to stay fresh, both in their sound and their looks.
Obviously I dig some of their songs, and have seen them play live 6 times, including their very first (and spectacular) gig in Porto, in Noites Ritual Rock, almost 10 years ago! Nobody could believe what they were seeing onstage!

Anyway, do yourselves a favour and visit their website for a bit of their music.

same... I saw them live in a festival this year.

They're highly original and some of their songs are very catchy but they're just not good enough. Or at least their sound doesn't appeal much to me. And my favourite genre is electronic rock/industrial so... that says quite a lot

The Atom Bride Theme was among my favourite tracks like 5 years ago though.

Actually there is, or at least they think there is. It's all connected with their sound and the lyrics. There's a whole imagery surrounding them, with songs sung in a strange alien dialect (good way to hide the fact you can't write any lyrics, uh?).

Haha, that reminds me of this rapgroup that played on Roskilde this year........"Ikscheltaschel".......they rap in a language they invented. :| Must be really entertaining watching a show you understand fuc*-all of. (H)

somewhat the negative replies don't really surprise me because:
1- they are completely different from anything that there is out there (and this why i like them - i don't like beeing another sheep in the flock), and most people's minds aren't very open to new things.

2- they are from Portugal, [sarcasm]and what do we portuguese know about music uh?[/sarcasm]

at least give them a try, they do deserve it!

i started listening to these not long ago, i already knew them and always liked their looks though i never really got interested in them...until i went to a concert back in March, when they launch their new album. and i was totally amazed at what i was seeing and listening, from then on i was just another of their fans.

it would be great if they could play at the next MTV European Music awards that is to be held in Lisbon, but it must be wishing to much..most likely will be the usual suspects getting the chance to perform live...

The "different" tag is used about pretty much any band/artist today.
If BM got more attention and became more popular and more people listened to it, then you'd still become "another sheep in the flock" ....does it stimulate your ego/coolness/intellectuality because you listen to a band that's not been embraced by the mainstream media?

WTF?! :|

Lay off the drugs man, no one here has said a damn (bad) thing about Portuguese music. :|

I don't think they're bad, they're just not good enough to make my playlist as no other portuguese band is.

In fact they're probably the only portuguese band I can hear without making me feel sick.

yep..

Portuguese music sucks and the videos are cheesy as hell, at least the suff I've heard/seen... I do get a good laugh at Portuguese Idol though, the finalists wouldn't stand a chance at a local farm town talent contest.. We should stick to fishing and playing soccer IMO, hehe :funny:

in BM's case it's not a tag, it's their way of doing music...

and it's not about talking bad about portuguese music, it's about being portuguese in the first place...i have a feeling that if they were spanish or french for example they would get a bit more attention...as an example, just look at the surprise it was for most people through out the world when Porto got to CL final in 2004. that's what i'm talking about...

Yes, I'll take your word for it. :)

Yes, but both French and Spanish is spoken in more countries than Portuguese so that naturally (in my opinion) increases the chances of a Spanish or French-speaking artist having international success. As has also been the case with the likes of Enrique Iglesias and others...

You can't compare those two things in my eyes. European football has been dominated for over a decade by Spanish, Italian, English and German clubs/football, so of course it was a suprise that a Portugese team made it. Add to that the fact that Porto didn't have any world-known superstars like Henry, Ronaldo, Zidane etc etc, and you can see why it was a surprise.

There are 3 or 4 great portuguese bands. Unfortunately they aren't even mainstrem for the portuguese standards, so there's no way they'll get any attention from the international media. Just to give you an example, there were those errr... I sent Dragan a couple mp3's... what's their name, Dragan?
