Beckham quits as England captain


But the Real Madrid star does want to to continue his international career.

Beckham revealed his decision at England's final press conference in Germany in the wake of their World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal.

The 31-year-old midfielder said: "I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter a new era under new coach Steve McClaren."

he like many others(lampard,gerrard,ronaldinho,kaka) has had a very bad world cup.

For someone that has always given 100% for England, he has just gone that extra step (sacrifice) for England.

We all know McClaren would not strip him of his captaincy, and as captain, he will most certainly continue to be selected. This will most likely draw alot of critics on McClaren.

So Becks has just sacrificed himself and let Steve McClaren have a easier transition into the job.

He may draw alot of criticism for his personal life, but for what he does on the pitch and for the team, he deserves nothing but the greatest respects. England is VERY lucky to have such a player.

Also, he is the FIRST english player to score in 3 WC. For those that can't wait to get rid of him, let see if any of his replacements can achieve the same feat.

Hopefully we'll see Becks in Euro 2008. England will need him.

Look where the captain's armband went after Becks came off... the new captain will be Gary.

There is still the issue of Gerrard and Lampard's inability to play together, so neither should get the armband and be guaranteed a spot.

Probably the best thing for England is if Chelsea bought Gerrard so Lampard and Gerrard can play together week in week out!

Even though i would love to see Gaz Nev as captain, i think that Gerrard would be the ideal captain now due to his age and think to the future.

Don't know what quitting captaincy means if u continue playing for the team. Beckham shouldn't do any of those things BTW.
