Yep, the awards season has started after the Toronto Film Festival a few weeks ago and there

are a lot of cool movies coming that Im very excited to see:

There Will Be Blood: Daniel Day-Lewis looking awesome in full mode to get an oscar in a movie from Paul Thomas Anderson??? Cant remember whats it about (oil, I think) but with Daniel Day Lewis is a must see (yeah, the balld of Carlos and rose was boring and kind of sucked overall but he was great anyway), and being from PTA is a must see too.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469494/

No Country for Old Men: The Coen Brothers. enough said.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477348/

Eastern Promises: Viggo and Cronenberg again. I've seen it already and its excellent. Violent and very dark. Vincent Cassell is kind of cartoonish but at the end has a very great scene acting-wise. The old guy playing the godfather-like role is great too.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765443/

Once: dramedy/musical, irish, with The Frames frontman as the star of the movie. the songs are all performed by them and its a perfect little movie. this one opened months ago actually and Im hoping it gets a chance at awards.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/

Atonement: Directed by Joe Wright (from pride and prejudice) with keira again. I loved P&P so this is a must see for me.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0783233/

In the Valley of Elah: From writer/director Paul Haggis with tommy lee jones and susan sarandon. Crash was excellent as was million dollar baby (he wrote it) so this should be great.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478134/

Into the Wild: a road trip adventure coming of age atory with emile hirsch from Sean Penn directing and writing? can't wait and the trailer rules.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/

The Kite Runner: this one looks like difficult movie to watch. very strong. from Mark Forster (finding neverland, stay, monster's ball).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419887/

Michael Clayton: with Clooney. he's so hot right now like Hansel. probably a great performance even if the movie doesn't sound that interesting right now.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465538/

Things We Lost in the Fire: Im watching this one only for Benicio. looks like a powerful performance from the trailer.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469623/

Lars and the Real Girl: with Ryan Gosling. he lars, a guy that gets a plastic doll as a girlfriend, and he acts like she's real and the whole town goes along. looks great.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805564/

The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford: with Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. western. looks excellent.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443680/

Juno: wants to be this year's little miss sunshine only that the writer director this time rules: Jason Reitman who did Thank you for smoking. Ellen Page is the lead with Michael Cera and Jason Bateman. writen by an ex-stripper called Diablo Cody :|
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467406/

3:10 to Yuma: Russell. Christia Bale. From James Mangold (Copland, Girl Interrupted, Walk The Line). another western (already opened too).

We Own The Night: Joaquin and Marky Mark in a crime drama. the trailer is excellent.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498399/

Reservation Road: Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Connely and Joaquin Phoenix. the trailer kind of says it all but it looks strong in performances. From Terry George who directed Hotel Rwanda.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831884/

The Darjeeling Limited: Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman from Wes Anderson. just opened. looks excellent if you like Wes Anderson's movies (Y).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0838221/

Gone Baby Gone: From Ben Affleck directing and writing. a crime drama with Casey Affleck. it looks pretty good.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452623/

American Gangster: Russell and Denzel in a crime drama from Ridley Scott. if done great it could be one of the best and most liked of the year.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765429/

Elizabeth: The Golden Age: not really interested in this one other than because of Cate's performance.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/

Sleuth: Michael Caine and Jude Law directed by Kenneth Branagh. Not sure what is about and havent heard much about it but with those names it should be good.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0857265/

I cant wait for some of those....

the following have me especially salivating:

There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Eastern Promises..... how cool does this look?
Assaination of....
American Gangster
We Own the Night
Sleuth... the story is a classic, hope the movie lives up to it
I'm not There... oscars written all over it
Youth Without Youth... finally I will get to see a Copolla movie at the cinema

And a return for Sidney Lumet too, THE most underrated director of all time... hadnt heard about it til now but will definately check it out.

The following dont look so good:

Atonement
Into the Wild
Elizabeth
Lions for Lambs

Also to look forward to....

Rendition... I'm looking forward to this one for personal reasons as the director is a guy I hung out with in Kenya.... supposedly another oscar hopeful, maybe back to back oscars for Witherspoon and Arkin? Also stars the male Gyllanhaal, who many really like, and Peter Saarsgard, who I really like.

Southland Tales.... I dont care what the critics are saying, it looks great and I'll watch anything by Richard Kelly. It's about time we finally get to see it.

Beowulf... probably just a ****ty blockbuster, but I love the story and I love Ray Winstone, so I'll definately get something from it.

Hitman.... you video games freaks should like this one, and I probably will just because I like movies about hitmen.

The Bucket List..... alright, I know Carlos's recent comedys havent been so good, but he's still Carlos, and together on screen with Morgan Freeman! I cant wait.

Also Golden Compass will be pretty big and could be good.

Hakeem

Superman
The Hitman trailer looks excellent. and I love Timothy Olyphant (Y)(Y)

Southland Tales I dont know. I love Kelly yes, but it stars The Rock and Sarah Michelle Gellar :|

and Sir_Didier_Drogba, is the director from Rendition the one that did Tsotsi, right? Gavin Hood. so yeah, that makes it a must see IMO (Y)

Yeah Gavin Hood directed Tsotsi and Rendition.... I wasnt impressed by Tsotsi, personally, but I am still looking forward to Rendition and it's great to see him moving up so fast.

And I still stand by the belief that if anyone can get a good performance out of The Rock and SMG, it's Richard Kelly.

^^ I get the vibe that you intensely loathe Cate. Is it so?

GOOD GOD! This just might be the strongest year for movies (*convulses with delight*) in a long while, man. I know that I've been loudly proclaiming each year as being the strongest since '04, but this fall has just been insane, man. The torrent of one tantalizing and phenomenal looking movie trailer after another has been going on since late summer and it doesn't seem to be slowing down one bit, man. Every ******* day I'm coming across some sweet lookin' flick with great Oscar potential on the television or in movie magazines.

If I can get in half of those flicks that you guys have listed above before the Oscars role around, I'll consider my '07 movie going schedule a major success!

I must agree that I have never seen a movie season preview as appealing as this before.

And no, I dont hate Cate, though I dont particularly like her either. Loved her scene in Coffee and Cigarettes, otherwise she hasnt done anything particularly memorable to me. Havent seen Notes on a Scandal though.

Cool. Well I highly recommend that you check out the Good German and the aforementioned Notes on a Scandal......btw, could you refresh my memory on her segment in Coffee and Cigarettes? Carlos and Meg White almost singlehandedly ruined that flick for me, man.

I'm really looking forward to the two Joaquin Phoenix flicks, man. Now there's an astute and dedicated actor whose role selection has been almost as impeccable as early Pacino and De Niro, man. He always brings the goods, that guy.

Starting XI
This has really been one of the greatest years in film that I can remember. No Country For Old Men, even though I haven't seen it yet, is my pick for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Just heard about a new Herzog movie coming out soon, Rescue Dawn. I think you septics have had it already, but the UK release date is Nov 23rd.

Looks quite commerical for Herzog, but I love the guy so much I will basically watch anything he makes, and the concept looks very interesting (surprised it hasnt been tackled before actually) and it stars the excellent Christian Bale.

Straight in at the top of my list of movies I cant wait to see.

I think I'll leave it the way it is if that's OK - the thread is just a sort of preview and just scratches the surface of these films - feel free to make individual threads for any of them.

Personally I am not as hooked up on Charlie Wilson's War as everyone else - I dont particularly like Hanks or Roberts, and am so far unimpressed by Emily Blunt, nor have I much liked Nichols' recent films, nor do I think that much of Sorkin's screenplays (A Few Good Men just screamed overblown and American President sucked ass). However, the story does look interesting

Man! I think you're being a bit harsh on those Sorkin flicks. I thought that the writing was very tight, witty and hilarious in both of them and that they were both marvelously casted.

In my opinion, Sorkin has been one of the sharpest, cleverest and productive writers of his generation. He's been a prodigious screenwriter for both television (Pretty much wrote the first four seasons of The West Wing by himself) and Hollywood. The West Wing, probably his magnum opus, was one of the smartest, well constructed and hilarious shows in the last 25yrs, man. Sports Night and Studio 60 are also other Television shows of his creation that were well acclaimed and impressively written.

Hakeem

Superman
Studio 60 was really good. too bad it got cancelled :(

and yeah Sir_Didier_Drogba, Rescue Dawn was release early in the year in the US. I havent seen it yet but I hear is REALLY good and that Bale gives a terrific performance (Y)

and from this list I got to see The Assassination of Jesse James and Gone Baby Gone this week. Jesse James is really good. Gone Baby Gone is one of the best Ive seen this year. probably the best serious movie Ive seen all year (gun to my face I'll probably say Transformers is the best movie of the year, just based on entertainment value but still).

oh yeah, Casey Affleck is a god in these movies (Y)(Y)(Y)

I would not dream of criticising his success and impact as a television writer, I have not seen the West Wing but I know it is regarded as one of the greatest television dramas ever made, but I thought the two films I mentioned earlier were really pretty poor, and that a lot of the reason for that was in the writing. A Few Good Men was decent in parts, and Carlos is always a good watch, but some of it was so over the top and hammy that it made me cringe. As for American President, I thought that was very, very weak to be honest.

Yep. It was the darling of the TIFF. I really enjoyed "Thank you for smoking', and I'll go out of my way to support former Arrested Development cast members (Cera, Bateman), but I'm not sure how I feel about this Ellen Page kid, man. She's being hyped up as being the next super heavyweight actress of her time, and I'm doubtful of all this praise that she's getting. I've only been able to see her in some Trailer Park Boys eps and Hard Candy so far, so I'm in no position to really be judging her yet, but I don't think that she was all that impressive, infact she was awkward and over-the-top, in Hard Candy, which is the movie that all this pub she's getting seems to be stemming from.

any of youse seen Hard Candy? If so, what did you think of her performance?

yep, saw Hard Candy and was lucky to meet Ellen Page after the movie. she's cute.
the movie I really liked. I thougt it was very tense, very calculated, and I didnt know
about the castration scene at all before going into the movie so that really killed me. I remember I was mentally exhausted when the movie ended.
the ending of the movie is not so good, I'll say that, but everything before that I liked so much that makes it a really good movie as a whole for me (Y)

Superman
Golden Globe nominations came out today, Atonement got the most noms followed by Charlie Wilson's War (Movie, Actor Tom, Sup Actor Hoffman, Supm Actress Julia) which is being dismissed by all the other critics groups so far (LA, NY and the NBR the biggest).

Those groups have gone instead with the Coen's No Country For Old Men that got GG noms for movie, director, writer and sup actor Javier Bardem, or Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood that got GG noms only for movie and actor Daniel Day-Lewis who is a front-runner, but nothing for PTA :(.

Sad that Once nor Knocked Up got noms for best comedy/musical, they went with Hairspray instead :| with Travolta getting a sup actor nom, and then Juno, Sweeney Todd and Across the Universe (the 5th was Charlie Wilson).
And Falling Slowly from Once not getting a Best Song nom is a crime (N)

Glad to see Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Casey Affleck getting supporting nods, and Ryan Goslin getting best actor for Lars and the Real Girl (Y). and not sure yet about John C Reilly getting a best comedic actor nod over Seth Roger for Knocked Up. Havent seen Walk Hard yet though (:/)
