Attempting to re-design how commentary works

Now, this is a bit long-winded, but please try and understand this:

I am thinking of trying to re-design the way FIFA does commentary (even though i'm only a layman like you guys) but i need a way to get the audio files from the game and get them into a regular format (mp3 etc.) The only way i can do it at the moment is with a microphone which is really poor quality.

Heres my idea:
You have the audio file, but you also have like digital markers at certain points in the audio file. EG. you have simply "Lampard" as an audio file, as it is now, for when he gets possession sometimes. How about breaking this down into 2 smaller parts like "Lam|pard".

During the loading phase of the game, in-built audio editing software would create numerous versions of this file and store them TEMPORARILY and only for that game. This would save a huge amount of space for repeated files.

BUT, what do I mean by altering the smaller parts?
Say you're playing as lampard, and take a shot from a fair way out. As you come in contact with the ball, commentators in real life go "Lam...paaAAARRRRRRDDDDD" if you get my drift. The first syllable of the name is slightly shorter, but the second syllable is much longer, and gets louder over time. Now, take this same template, and apply it to any other player with a 2 syllable name

"Ger....aaaaRRRRRDDDDDDD"
"Tev...eeeeeEEEEEZZZZ"
"Roo....nnnNNNNEEEEYYYY"

With this variation, can make much more syncing (hopefully) with non-player specific commentary. I.E, only have 1 audio sound of "goes past the player", but with this new version you could add every players name before that phrase as if you would normally. I noticed that audio took up 1.4GB, and with this i'd hope to bring that down.

Its a bit hard to imagine unless i can get the sound files, but if anyone knows how i can get them (I've tried File Master 08, have exported the files, but don't know how to convert them to MP3 or equivilant)

I got the idea from old FIFA games where at the start of each game they said the 2 teams playing, but was obviously 3 sound files "Brazil" "versus" "Argentina", so i plan to try minimise the amount of files needed, by increasing variation.

NOTE: I only plan to do this by editing volume, and the length of the audio, and do this in Sony Vegas.

Help is much appreciated, and if you got all this way through my attempted explanation, congratulations :D

Sounds like a really big task, but I love the idea. If you pull this off, I salute you. Now why doesn't EA Sports think of these things....or are they just too lazy...?

that's sound so cool! :p looks like every each player can have their name being called by the commentary then :) but it really will take up a large processor power i think

Hopefully not a large processor. Because i only intend to change the volume and length of each syllable, it shouldn't take too long. On my computer with 3.2GHZ, 2GB RAM (although it runs really slow when it should be fast) it takes about 0.25 secs to render a typical players name into mp3 format. But, this is using sony vegas, a program designed to be a video editing tool and have hundreds of different settings and combinations possible. If EA were to make a purpose built program which only changed the volume and length, it would be much much quicker (hopefully) and given that the Next Gen consoles have such processing power, shouldn't be an issue

For it to even get off the ground, i need to know how to access the sound files and convert them into MP3 format. Please people, this could be a revolution here, but i need your help

Thanks

Your idea sounds great but it is a lot of work. To convert the files:
1. You need to export them from the eng_dat.big -- oops! that is dat_eng.big
2. Convert the dat files to wav files
3. Convert the wav files to mp3's ( you can use itunes to
do this part. I use a very old program to convert back
and forth - music match but you can use whatever you
like.

Hope this helps you a bit. You can try using
Soundmaster - SM07 - I could not get it work on my
system so had to go another route.
