6800 gt is clearly better in most games unless you plan to play just Half Life 2 where the x800 XT (not Pro) is better.

don't get the nvidia ****. I mean it's ok but ati is way better not only for HL2 but for most games.
that means ati

The 6800GT is better than the X800 Pro because the 6800GT has more pixel pipelines, a more updated Shader Model and the fact that it generally can be overclocked to a higher level.

Although you find that FarCry and HL2 run better on the X800XT and Doom3 is far better on the 6800, the framerates both cards give would mean that you wouldn't really see the difference. If someone can spot the difference between 70fps and 75fps, they're lying! Generally the human eye can see a maximum of 60fps.

Also bear in mind that driver releases optimise graphics cards so keep up to date with that.

You can't really go wrong with either card, but the 6800GT is cheaper than the X800XT by about £50 so I think you'd be better off with the 6800GT.

No probs

What system do you have at the moment? Because if you have a presshot then chances are the chipset only supports PCI-E and then you can't get the 6800GT, but if you are on an Athlon socket A/754/939/940 then you can't get PCI-E ones, and hence probably not the X800XT. (although PCI-E boards with Via's new chipset and nForce4 are starting to sell)

ati x800 pro has 12 pipelines which in some cards can become 16 like the rest.
But it's not the only thing that has to do with it. Because if e.g ati has 500 mhz clock and nvidia 450 doesn't mean that it will run slower than the ati.
GO ati

Why didn't you go for Athlon 64? Cheaper, cooler, more efficient, faster . . . :(

From the poll it seems like we have quite a few ATi fanboys (H)

About the FPS thing an eye can see, there is a program (simple) that displays two rotating rectangles, and if you set one to 30FPS and the other to 60FPS you see a distinct difference. I'd say 50-60+ you don't really notice a difference. Will post it if I come across it again.

Did you go for the X800XT or X800Pro? If you went for the Pro over the GT, I'm going to have to slap you hard :(
