Super Coppa: Inter Milan vs Roma (19/8/2007 )
Spalletti eyes Super Cup revenge
Luciano Spalletti has urged Roma to take revenge for last year’s thrilling 4-3 defeat against Inter in tonight’s Italian Super Cup.
The clash at San Siro between the Scudetto winners and Coppa Italia holders is the official opener to the football season in Italy.
Last August the Giallorossi were leading 3-0 only to crumble 4-3 in extra time to a Luis Figo free kick.
“With the hard work we have done throughout the year, we have earned ourselves the right to contest – and win – this trophy,” said Spalletti.
“This, along with the result that had seemed to be going another way last term, can act as extra motivation for us.”
It was an extraordinary match 12 months ago, as Roma shredded the Inter defence in the first half only to concede three goals and a fourth in extra time.
“We have already shown that we are the equal of Inter and now that the squad has been completed I don’t see why we should go there and give up before we even begin.”
That was not the only meeting between the two title contenders over the past year, as Roma also defeated Inter in the Coppa Italia Final and were the only team to beat the Scudetto winners in the 2006-07 Serie A season.
Yet Roberto Mancini have reinforced their side with ex-Roma man Cristian Chivu and have so many great strikers at their disposal that Adriano has been left in the stands as a tactical choice.
“One must never have an inferiority complex in football. Inter are stronger, but we do not feel inferior to them,” assured the Coach.
“Inter still have to work on some issues of their own. Chivu has some contenders for his place, but I think Mancini will use him because he knows us so well that it can be an advantage for them.”
If the Nerazzurri are able to leave top stars in the stands, then the same cannot be said for Roma, who are without Matteo Ferrari and Juan, so Christian Panucci is expected to play in an unusual central defensive position, but others are recovering from injuries.
“Francesco Totti has completed the training and is in good shape, while Simone Perrotta and Amantino Mancini are also ready. I do have a few doubts over Marco Andreolli, though.”
Roma squad: 17 Alvarez, 30 Mancini, 13 Andreolli, 8 Aquilani, 29 Barusso, 27 Bertagnoli, 33 Brighi, 77 Cassetti, 1 Curci, 16 De Rossi, 18 Esposito, 14 Giuly, 32 Doni, 5 Mexes 23 Nonda, 2 Panucci, 20 Perrotta, 28 Rosi, 11 Taddei, 22 Tonetto, 10 Totti, 9 Vucinic
