AS Roma History

A.S. Roma (Associazione Sportiva Roma) is a Italian football club. Nicknamed the giallorossi, it plays in Serie A. Roma's home uniforms are dark red shirts with dark yellow borders, white shorts and black socks.

The emblem is the Capitoline she-wolf lactating twins, symbol of Rome, superimposed a bipartite golden-yellow over red shield; official colors are the same as those of Rome, red for imperial dignity, gold for the Christian God.

The current stadium is the 82,656 seater Stadio Olimpico, which is shared with S.S. Lazio. The two teams compete against one another each year in the Rome derby, a major and emotional event in Italian football.

A.S. Roma was founded in July 1927, when Rome already had three teams in the Italian football league - Alba, Fortitudo and Lazio. The Fascist regime's idea at the time was to merge all the Rome clubs into one which the many newly-arrived immigrants could identify with, Lazio considered very much a patrician club of the Roman social elite, and strong enough to challenge the northerners. Lazio refused even a meeting but Alba, Pro Roma, Fortitudo and Roman attended and Roma was formed. Roma was named after the city and with the red and yellow strip of the Roman club. The initial stadium was Motovelodromo Appio. They took part in their first league in the 1929-30 season.

A.S. Roma won their first scudetto in the 1941-42 season. The second was won in the 1982-83 season and the third in 2000-01. They were runners-up in 1930-31, 1935-36, 1980-81, 1983-84, 1985-86, 2001-02 and 2003-04. They were relegated only once, at the end of the 1950-51 season.

The club has won the Coppa Italia seven times: 1963-64, 1968-69, 1979-80, 1980-81, 1983-84, 1985-86, and 1990-91, and the UEFA Cup (Fairs Cup) once in 1960-61, defeating Birmingham City. In 1984, A.S. Roma lost the final match of the European Cup, played in Rome, against Liverpool F.C., after a penalty shootout.

Pay some more attention in your history classes. ;)
Those humans you see are actually the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, according to the roman mythologie. They were found by wolf, who instead of killing them, looked after them and fed them with her milk. :) It's a nice myth eh. ;)

Totti signs Roma deal
by Nadia Carminati - created on 31 May 2005

The Giallorossi have spent several months locked in talks to persuade Totti to extend his spell with his boyhood heroes.

For his part, Totti has repeatedly affirmed his desire to stay in the Eternal City, despite frequent interest from Real Madrid.

Totti's deal had been due to expire in 12 months' time but Roma have now avoided the potential catastrophe of the Italy international leaving for nothing.

The Serie A side have announced that the team's skipper has signed a deal which will keep him at Stadio Olimpico until 2010.

There is also a commitment from Roma for Totti to take up a position on the club's management staff when he retires from playing.

Totti's decision to pen the terms on offer, which will reputedly earn the forward €10.4 million per season, will be a major boost to Roma.

The club have endured a turbulent season, with four coaches having been in charge of the team during the past 12 months.

With the futures of Totti and key striker Vincenzo Montella now secured, Roma are likely to turn their attention towards cajoling Antonio Cassano into agreeing a new contract.

good to see Totti committing (Y).

Hopefully Cassano follows suit very soon, would hate for them to lose him on a free or a cut rate price. Maybe they resigned Montella a bit too early, since he signed his form dropped dramatically.

I think the outlook for next season looks great, they just need to sign the right coach. Right now Zeman, Cosmi and Trappatoni are the main candidates. Out of the 3 I think Il Trap is best choice as he can restore some sorely missing discipline. With Zeman theyd be very entertaining, thats a guarentee. This would be Cosmi's first job with a big club, but i hope he remains with Genoa. Roma is almost guarenteed to be signing Taddei on a free anytime soon, and thats a good signing.

never seen the Roma logo that up close, pretty graphic (C)

Why Totti signed with Roma… Wednesday 1 June, 2005
------------------------------------------------------------------------Francesco Totti has revealed the reasons behind why he’s decided to commit his future to Roma.

The Giallorossi hero is now tied to the outfit until 2010 after he last put pen to paper on a new contract.

"I’ve been assured certain guarantees regarding the squad, the club and the new Coach," said Totti on Wednesday.

"I’ve taken this step because it is something that I really wanted to do. I just can’t see myself in another shirt."

Totti has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Inter and Milan but he’s again underlined how important his hometown club is to him.

"There is a desire to see Roma return to the levels of the past," he added. "Winning a title here is worth the same as winning 10 at another club.

"This is the most beautiful month of my life. We’ve qualified for the UEFA Cup, ensured survival, reached the Coppa Italia Final and my marriage to Roma and (girlfriend) Illary.

"Antonio Cassano? I would be disappointed if he left."

Totti will net a massive £7.5m a season, but can the club offer another player such a deal? "Only if Ronaldinho arrives…" smiled Totti.

It’s also believed that the Roman will continue to work for the club once his playing days come to an end.

"I’m just thinking about being a footballer right now," he underlined. "We’ll see what happens but I am happy with this shirt both on and off the pitch."

Roma were understandably happy that their symbol would be staying. "This agreement is important for the President and the club," said chief operating officer Rosella Sensi.

"Francesco has tied his name to the club and the fans. He is a symbol of Roman football in Italy and the world, as well as being a great man on and off the pitch."

Meanwhile, Totti has tried to explain why he’s been omitted from the latest Italian national squad.

"It was a decision that needs to be respected," he added. "Marcello Lippi phoned me on Thursday and he explained the motives behind why he’s left me out – even if I can’t tell you.

"I’m saddened because I wanted to be a part of the Norway game which is very important."

i would still rather have totti than ronaldinho (H)

Juventus make Cassano bid Wednesday 1 June, 2005
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juventus have reportedly made Roma an initial player plus cash offer in their bid to sign Antonio Cassano.

Director general Luciano Moggi is understood to have met with Giallorossi chief operating officer Rosella Sensi on Tuesday to start talks.

The Bianconeri are ready to hand over Adrian Mutu and £9m for the Italian international forward.

Moggi made contact at the request of Fabio Capello, who bossed the youngster during his time in the Italian capital.

Juve are also keen to wrap up the deal as soon as possible given that Inter and Real Madrid are also interested in the former Bari starlet.

The Stadio Olimpico side will now have to decide what to do with Cassano as his contract expires in 2006.

The club have already extended the contracts of Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti but an agreement with Cassano may be difficult.

The cost of keeping the 23-year-old would be high and it may make more sense to cash in on him, especially as they will now be paying Totti £7.5m-a-season.

It was believed that Juve would offer cash and Shabani Nonda to the Giallorossi but that now looks unlikely.

Reports in Italy today suggest that Nonda has failed a medical and therefore will not complete a summer move to Juve from Monaco.

Bayern Munich stopper Robert Kovac has passed his medical and he is set to be confirmed as a Juve player very soon.

Meanwhile, Olivier Kapo could be heading back to France. The winger has failed to settle in Turin since his move from Auxerre and Monaco are keen on his services.
