Arsenal -- Who's going to stop them.

It is still too early to say that Arsenal will conquer all.

Their defence might be fairly strong in the Champions League, but they always seem to concede the odd goal in domestic football. When they play the better sides in the Champions League then they will start conceding.

Arsenal might have a deep squad, but it doesn't mean they'll automatically win the Champions League and the Premiership.

Roma has no chance to win the Champions League. Pound for pound they're not a bad team, but after watching their performances against Real Madrid and Modena, I doubt if they have what it takes.

Man Utd and Liverpool remain the only realistic contenders for the title. Middlesbrough might be able to stop Arsenal in an odd game but I don't think they can last the pace for the season.

Arsenal are in exceptional form this year. Their trick is to keep the momentum going. Of course Real and Arsenal would be a match to die for in the CL and we will see it no doubt eventually. I think that it would come down to the away goals, but I would lean towards Arsenal. They are so fluid and they have the defense to contain the onslaught of teams like Real. They have been underachievers in the last 2 CLs IMO and their group doesnt seem to test them as well as some other teams have been tested (AC Milan, Valencia), save for Dortmund and we will see their first real test when they play in Germany, until the knockout round.

As for the EPL, they certainly have what it takes. If they are to be overtaken, it will have to be soon. If they carry their momentum until after Christmas it will be an ever steeper hill for competing teams to catch them, much less stay ahead. They show no signs of tiring and they actually seem to be getting better, so they are my favorites for the league title this year for that reason. But oh how I wish it wasn't so.

To say Man Utd. have no chance at the CL crown or at beating Arsenal is just folly. They are bouncing back from their setbacks quite vividly in both the CL and the EPL. With the loss of Keane and other pivotal players to injury, they were capitalized upon. But they have what it takes and unlike Arsenal are regular CL over-achievers.

Basically it is presumptious to label Arsenal as CL favorites. As of now AC Milan, Juventus and Valencia look like better crown contenders.

And as of now, Chelsea just need to get back in the CL. GO BLUES

Real and Arsenal will be beaten, for sure, but it's probably going to be a team you didn't expect. (Bolton beating Man U.?)
I think that Real/Arsenal/AC Milan will win this year...

Bayern were good on paper but when it came down to it, (AC Milan game) Elber just couldnt convert and Linke was just apalling in his marking of Inzaghi. I think Ballack had a good game though..

Arsenal are at the moment favourites for the Epl. they are using the 'fear factor' to their advantage against lesser teams. remember chelsea throwing the game away against a 10-man arsenal. also west ham. arsenal could have been stopped in any of those two games. but the ability to put away such games makes them favourites. their squad has superb athleticism throughout which is a handful for many Epl teams. but i don't think they can go all the way unbeaten!!
in the CL Arsenal are not the top favourites coz the 'fear factor' won't work there, they haven't done too well in the CL in recent seasons which means they won't be so much at ease playing Real Madrid in the semi-finals for example. But they are contenders and tht's about it. and i agree that middlesborogh do have the ability to beat arsenal, not to mention Manu and Liverpool.

Arsenal had a fair slice of luck so far this term. They were fortunate to beat Bolton and get a draw at West Ham, if they had lost in Upton Park the table would look very different.

Digitarious i agree that it is to early to say Arsenal will conquer all but the form they are in does conquer all, the question is do they have the confidence and resolve to keep it up over 60games, i have a sneaky feeling that in the EPL they will go unbeaten, and Mr WEenger given nothing catastrophic happens, will motivate them to do exactly that in all competitions. And they most certainly were not lucky to beat Bolton,, they were very unlucky not to have ended the game 4 or up.

And as for the chelsea match, chelsea were lucky not to end up conceeding more than 1 goal to 10-man Arsenal,if you watch the game again (i have it on video btw) you would see what i mean.

The only draw that i think was fair, was West Ham's draw, and though Arseanl fully deserved it, i must say that west Ham were able to dominate overallfor more than 45mins, surprings no team has managed more than 15mins of dominance when playing Arsenal...than westham, PSV managed about 15mins and that was it.

Arsenal were very unlucky last season...they were the team with the most injuries throughout most of the season (check the OPTA stats to confirm this) yet pressed on, with early 2002 when they started that run, they had up to 9 first team memebers out..and were still more than a match for all their oppoonenets both EPL and champions league, even Juventus away which they were very unlucky to lose. The only team in that period that truly beat them was Deportivo La Coruna, and if you watch that game its as if Arsenal went berserk after those two goals, it was such a blow you could see the players were clueless, as if dazed, like they were seeing stars , they were all over the place no form nothing after those two goals went in, those two goals managed to break their resolve, i dont know how, i dont know why, the game was young, but it did that, aresnal didnt recover in that game, but also that mistake never happened again.

REal Madrid has a few weak teams, Arsenal is one of them, last time they met in 1998 Arsenal won 3-1.

Fear factor, i think teams should be very wary of Arsenal, the way the play is devastating, they are right to be fearful, stupid to believe it. BEsides the ARsenal has come up against those who've believed the hype (Sunderland, WEst Bromwich Albion) and beat them, and also faced those who haven't belived the hype (PSV Eindhoven, Leeds United amongst some) and thrashed them.

REmember arsenal have always been slow at the start of the season (exception this time), why? because they are slow starters?? NO, MAn Utd are the slow starters, just check the records..but Arsneal have been slow to start since they first won the double in 1997/1998 season because of all the holiday sagas...first Anelka, then overmasrs/PEtit, then Veira, so much press and suqad dismantling, that off course they were dazed and disorinetated because unlike most they had already lost key personnel before the season even started, with not enough time to replace and rebuild in time to challenge quality like Manchester United.

ANd the reason why most of you a thinking Arsenals home dominance will not go that far in Europe I lay squarely on the shoulders of Man Utd, who were unable to pull off the consistencey of home form in the champions league (because most English teams were overawed, and most European teams weren't), and because they didnt do it when they dominated the last two years before last year, people think its easy to win the premiership and but not Europe (which isn't true at all,but thanks to Man U, they do, Arsenal will correct this error), but all this belies certain things. Teams were overawed by Man Utd because of their accomplishements and not necsessarily their play during the games in ENgland (their wer many games man u played averagely, well below their abilities but still won when they should or may have been beaten if the other team if they had showed more guts)...teams folded just because it was the treble Man U they were playing not because man U were playing so fantastic (they did play some fantastic games mind you remember Man UTd 6 Arsenal 1) but the teams who weren't afraid always took points off them, they werent invincible or that formidable at all, few European teams showed them the same respect(those they had to fight and start playing like they could or be beaten like they), chelsea certainly didnt (remember Chelsea 5 Man Utd 0) neither did Liverpool or Arsenal. Arsenal have not won anything yet, people are not overawed at their accomplishements, they won the double in some style, but its their form of play that is devasting not their reputation, they need to win the big prize, i.e. the champions league before their reputation can carry them through like it did Man U.

So at the end of it, no, Arsenal are devasting because they are playing extremely well offensively (PSV game, LEeds, u name em) and defensively (see the Auxerre and PSV games - the goals they've conceded in the premisehsip are sloppy cheap goals.one of the reasons why Arsene WEnger syas there is still room for improvement),ut they haven't showed the same moementary lapse of concentration in the Champions league, they are yet to concede a goal their.

But if you ask me if they have what it takes to win Europe yes...are they believing the hype aorund them?NO!!! and that is why they will continue winning.. Rmemeber their is still a lot of room for imporovement in the likes of SIlva, Ljungberg, COle, Cygan, Henry, to name a few, who haven't peaked yet continue to improve. and Pires has to return from injury..

But as Arsene Wenger said, good form is all well and good, it counts for nothing if you dont keep it up and bring a trophy at the end of it. By winning last year Arsenal showed that they have a squad to cope with plenty of injuries. All their misginvings they pulled through after half way through first part of last season, where they conquered the probelms that plagued them the seasons before, those destablising affects were finished when Arsene Wenger signed a new contract and Vieira leaving rumours were quashed, and the new players geled in, then their true form started to show, remember Man U, liverpol had no such probelms seasons before, LIverpool tho had Gerard Houlier OUt for last season, and I think if he hadnt gotten sick, Liverpool would have won the league, not Arsenal, I say this because i still think that Arseanal would have finished with the same number of points and run liverpool close, but liverpool would have done well, becuase their starting form was excellent in a period of time Arsenal were still in disarray. I belive this season would have been when Arsenal would win the league title from Liverpool...only that liverpool never won it, and i'm afraid i doubt they would this year. THey will get their trbel season form back, but by then arsenal would be too late.

I actually think the Gunner's defense is overrated, and i myself am an arsenal fan

There is a huge difference between defending well against Auxerre and PSV (teams who's aim in the CL is to get to the second phase, thus generating more money) and having to defend against potential winners (real et. al.)

I think we are a Sol Campbell injury away from disaster, and also worry what would happen should Lauren get injured.

We have bought sooooo many defenders in the past (Tavrilidis, Svard, Stepanovs) but they have barely got a look in. Stepanovs performed well when called on last season, having got over that horrific 6-1 defeat against Man U the season before. However he hasn't been rewarded with more opportunities, and i wonder at how determined he would be to prove his worth, since he did so last season and didn't seem to get much in return.

I think we rely waaaay to much on Sol/Keown/Cygan

I myself is an Arsenal fan and Im no way agreeing that we rely too much on Keown/sol/cygan.....what makes up such a great team is tt we have depth in our squad....Look at Kolo Toure and Jeremie.........so I think that we have able defenders in the reserves should any defender get injured....

[qoute]I think no one in England can match up to Arsenal now........[/qoute]

'Nuff said.

Real Madrid, AC Milan and Arsenal are all my top picks for winning the Champions League, but only in that order. Juventus and Valencia seem to be at a lower level in the European aspect, but very high in a domestic aspect (as they both won their domestic leagues). Real Madrid, however, are my no.1 pick, now that Ronaldo is getting his form back and the team seem stronger than ever. AC Milan are developing well too though with Inzaghi in his best form yet, Rui Costa, Rivaldo, Nesta, Maldini, Seedorf, Shevchenko and Tomasson (or whatever). They seem strong, but are more of a 'team of champions' than a champion team, but they are proving to be very strong with a 4-0 win away to Deportivo La Coruna, one of the finest teams in the world's finest league (:)).

So I expect a final between Real Madrid and AC Milan, unless of course the two teams meet before the final, which of course Real Madrid will win. But at least we can rest assure that the two will most probably verse each other in the CL, who else can beat them (besides Arsenal)?

i agree with you Arsenal seem short of adequate cover in the back, altho Stepanovs and Co. covered quite well last year, they had the experienced Grimandi. Arsenal lost adams and Grimandi, and only got CYgan. If the youngsters dont come of age this season or they perform particularly bad in the first half, i think they shall see at least one possibly two defenders bought, I suspect either Emerton,Hofland or Mexes,, if they aren't too dear.

I'm suprised this thread has kept on going actually:kader: on the point of arsenal's defence, i havent read much sense so far here, everyone goes on about how bad R.madrid's defence is but they won the CL with that defense, arsenal's defence is not the focal point of our whole game and stop assuming it is,and i cant even remember the combinations we played in defence last season it was too many. I dont know what team exists with absolute balance, i remember we had this other long thread talking about R.madrid v B.munich, but now that bayern are tanking (remember this was supposed to be a solid team etc..)its turned to arsenal. Its possible that things could go badly at later stages but why should you be thinking that whilst u,ve been doing so well for a while now. And oh yeah.. the critics holy grail w.ham v arsenal, lets not forget that we were close to winning that game as well and what have w.ham done since then eh!!. Ive also seen here people saying r.madrid coming from 3 - 1 down against athens was due to their skill but arsenal coming from two down is luck? and seaman saved that pen so dont even use that, and the table would be different also if liverpool werent lucky against chelsea,or manu with their penalties and last minute goals.

Jeez, Everton and a 16 year old kid finally stopped Arsenals great run --
==============================================
Arsenal's 30-match unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of 16-year-old prodigy Wayne Rooney, whose last-gasp strike gave Everton a 2-1 win at Goodison Park. -- laugh, that 'last gasp' pun, seems to sum it all up. --

Not forgetting David Seamans ageing bones --
