Arsenal Thread [2004-2005]

Why do Arsenal cross the ball so much all of a sudden?

You don't have a great crosser in the team and you don't play with a striker in the box, so what's the point?

Well if you can't break down a team with your usual tactics, you'll have to try something new. We didn't break down CP, so we started crossing..

"I wish we could use Quincy on his shirt, but they won't let us. I don't know how to pronounce his name. I've tried, but I can't do it."

Arsene Wenger said he would stick with his crop of youngsters: "It would be criminal to drop them, I can't do it."

anybody else heard that david bently aint doin' to well at norwich? their manager has completly dropped him from the past couple of squads, because he hasn't been seeing to his defensive duties. anyone else concered with this treatment or do you think they are just helping us out by teaching him early to be a "team player", possibly like what happened to pennant at leeds last season?

well, our wingers dont really help out so much, they are more attacking and help out the forwards, while the central midfielders are helping out in general, so i dont think this is such a big issue

Bentley needs to shut up and play.

Seriously, I'm tired of hearing him. He said he'd leave if he didn't get playing time at arsenal. Start at Norwich first Dave, maybe that would help your cause. We have no shortage of exciting young players.

thats also true, him and pennant talk too much

what is it with these young guns that are brougt up at arsenal (mostly)and their big mouths

You don't hear Gael and Ali (when fit) talk like that, and they regularly find themselves on the bench and getting subbed in. They also both have premiership medals to prove it.

JP has changed for the better tho.

JP has changed for the better, definately.
If he David doesn't stand out in Norwich, there is no way he's going to make it at Arsenal. Sounds like another Cassano case, except Cassano actually gets the job done.

it has to be said though both DB and JP have been performing well for the england u-21's (especially JP) so i don't think its a question of talent, just attitude. i also agree that JP has changed for the better and hasn't been sayin as much as before (say pre-leeds) and IMO would see about 15 sub/starts apps by the end of the season, now if bentley can learn/go through the same things that JP went through then i think norwich might be saving us problems later.

It'd be funny to hear Highbury make some noise again and what better than howling like a wolf? Make it so, people. Howl for Aturooooooooooooooooooo.

Brilliant stuff, I hope that works out! Wolfy. (H)

Bashful Freddie bearing up to the pressure
By Steve Stammers, Evening Standard
12 November 2004

It is easier to persuade Freddie Ljungberg to pose in his underwear for an advertising campaign than it is to get the 27-year-old Swede to talk about himself. His dress sense may suggest otherwise, but Ljungberg is no self-publicist.

His form, however, has been one of the few bright spots in a difficult spell when Arsenal have gone from invincibles to apparent novices without a win in their last five Premiership and Champions League matches.

"Let's just say I hope that I am improving as a player," said the midfielder with five goals and as many assists to his name this season.

But, while he is reluctant to discuss his value to the team, his manager is not.

"I want to keep him at Arsenal," said Arsene Wenger, and to that end, preliminary talks have opened on a new contract. "Yes, there have been talks and I have to say I enjoy life at Arsenal," said Ljungberg.

"The boss has signed a new contract and there is the new stadium to move into in two years. I am happy."

But while Ljungberg's future looks secure, of more immediate import is the mini-slump that has seen Arsenal surrender top place in the Premiership to Chelsea. Not the best of preparations ahead of the North London derby with Tottenham. Ljungberg, though, urges a sense of perspective.

"We haven't been beaten in this run since the defeat at Old Trafford," he said. "What we have to address is that we are taking the lead in games and letting the opposition come back. We are giving the ball away and every mistake is being punished. But there is no reason to panic. We didn't lose for 49 games so we have been doing something right."

Arsenal face another severe test at White Hart Lane tomorrow and Ljungberg said: "It will be hard. It always is and their players will be out to impress their new manager. It is a massive game but we have to concentrate on playing football and not get caught up in the atmosphere."
