Should Dennis quit? Yes, no? And why? I have a hard time making up my mind on this.WENGER: BERGKAMP CAN CONTINUE
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Dennis Bergkamp is irreplaceable - and revealed the veteran's current form is good enough to earn another year's contract.
Wenger will not make a final decision until he sits down with Bergkamp at the end of the current campaign - just before the striker’s 36th birthday - to assess his form and fitness.
However, Bergkamp, who originally intended to retire this summer, has already indicated he would like to stay on for the final season at Highbury before the move to a new stadium.
Wenger declared: "You simply cannot find a player to replace Dennis because players of that quality are non-existent at the moment.
"I have to say that he has been in great form recently. I know he is keen on staying here next year and we will sit down and talk about it at the end of the season.
"He wants to play on for as long as possible, which I understand, but also what you have to respect is that we don't spoil the end of his career.
"He has done so well for us over the years that I want to make sure he is remembered as a true legend here.
"But there is no question that, if he is playing like this at the end of the season, he will carry on. He has to play just for the short-term at the moment, but all the signs of his form look fantastic."
Above all, Wenger believes Bergkamp, who was one of the catalysts for Arsenal's renaissance when he was signed by Bruce Rioch from Inter Milan for £7.5million nearly 10 years ago, is the perfect role model for all youngsters.
"He is a great example to young players. He has led a real top professional life for his whole career. You never see him out - he has three kids at home and that's a good way to keep you there!" he observed.
"You never see him drinking and between 30 and 36 or 37, that makes a huge difference. To play up front at nearly 36, you don't usually find that. He is getting rewarded for the quality of his life.
"I feel we manage him well and don't make him travel too much."
That extends to Bergkamp, who does not fly, avoiding exhausting overland trips to away games, which will include the Champions League last 16 tie at Bayern Munich next week.
Strike partner Thierry Henry is simply relieved that the former Holland international is still lighting up the game - and showing no signs of retiring just yet.
"Thank God for that!" admitted Henry. "You can talk about him all night, the way he plays, the way he sets up people, the way he sees the game.
"The thing I love about Dennis is that he can beat a team with just one pass. He sees things that other people can't see and just try to give you the ball.
"It is a pleasure to play with him as I know that, whenever I move, he is going to give me the ball. I just hope that when he moves, I can give him the ball as well."
Henry, meanwhile, claims he would stay at Arsenal until 60 if he was allowed to.
In the wake of his side’s 5-1 win against Crystal Palace, the 27-year-old France international spelled out just how hard it would be for any player to leave Arsenal - even if greater wages were on offer elsewhere.
“If it was only down to me, I would stay here until I’m 60, although obviously someone might come and put me on the bench before then!” he revealed.
“The law of sport is that someone will one day come and do better than you. That is how I came into the game - taking the place of someone else.
“But my commitment and desire to play for this team is huge. I’ve said it so many times and I will always say it. Nothing bad has happened to me here, everything is cool and the fans are cool with me.
“I don’t know whether I could choose any club I wanted but it is special here. I have fans who love me and I like them also.
“I’ve found something that I don’t know whether I could find anywhere else. I fought for that as well, so it’s not as though you can just walk away from that.
“When I wasn’t that great, the fans were always trying to cheer me up and I can never forget that. I hope I can play for as long as I can here.”
