I just saw the Argentinian Squad that is headed to Germany....I cannot believe it! I have never been a BIG fan of Pekerman...and I definately am not learning to like him especially after not calling up some players for this World Cup. I always supported Bielsa, and he was doing wonders with the squad in the qualifying campaign before 02..yes they struggled in the WC, but they had the hardest group and it could have been a fluke because before he "resigned" (BS! They made him...), Argentina was doing very well again in the qualifying campaign.
I have every reason to believe El Loco Bielsa could have gone just as far as Pekerman's squad will go in this World Cup.
Pekerman is crazy though. He doesn't call up Walter Samuel nor Javier Zanetti. Two very solid players (I still believe Samuel is a Top Defender..) who have WC experience..which is something this squad lacks. Read the article...how Zanetti isn't called up is unexplainable. Samuel is understandable because people feel he has fallen off...but I just do not understand the Zanetti move. Both should have been called up IMO.
There are players who can fill in..Coloccini, Heinze, Milito etc.
But come on..Zanetti played for the NT in both the 98 and 02 WC. He is not only a speedy defender, but he can also be used as a quick midfielder who can create dangerous plays down the flanks. Pekerman is unbelievable..
Like I said, Samuel is understandable as many people do believe he isn't what he once was (I disagree)...but he does have WC experience..something this squad lacks.
Look how many potential starters and key players have LITTLE (some have no WC experience!). Riquelme, Saviola, Tevez, Coloccini, Heinze, Mascherano, Messi, Abbondanzieri (the starting GK for crying out loud!)
This team could very well choke just like the 02 squad did that was filled with veterans (I think it was a mixture of a fluke/bad luck/tough draw). I think they can overcome the odds though. This is one of my Top 3 NT that I root for, but with the decisions being made, I wouldn't be surprised to see them not do as well as expected.
EDIT - As a matter of fact...all the players I named that have "little" WC experience..have NO World Cup experience. Between all those players...they have appeared in 0 World Cup game! Those are 8 players...1/3 of the team..and that is just naming the key players. There are others with no WC experience that I don't think will contribute that much. Oh my god, the mistake Pekerman is making....
Just my 0.02....
