Wayne Gretzky is arguably the greatest player to play in the NHL. He is considered among the best of the best in the world. I do not believe that there was/is anyone that can match up to Wayne while he was in his prime. Certainly none of the up and comers even from even the top Euro teams can match what Wayne has done.

Well, Mario Lemieux would be the closest to match Gretz. A lot of people bash Gretz for being too soft and for having a big reputation so that all tough guys do not touch him.. Oh well.
as for the youngsters, there is this Russian, named Ilia Kovalchuk, got slected by Atlanta first overall this passed NHL rookie draft.. He's considered to be the best prospect since Eric Lindros.. 18 years old, better watch out for him in the future.. Has got scoring ability of Pavel Bure and aggresiveness of Claude Lemieux (Claude Lemieux, not Mario)..
PS. I never said that Bure was anywhere close to Gretzky
