He was overlooked I would say because of the choice at the time. Shearer (absolute legend even though i don't support Newcastle) was a sure starter, Sheringham was around and Michael Owen started to appear on the NT. Still an excellent player, whether or not the england managers recognised that.

Cole should've made the bench at least. But look at the choice of a certain reserve striker at that time: Paul Merson <==== WTF?!!!!

Not untrue. I guess maybe he should have had more of a chance pre 96 when Shearer wasn't scoring for the National side. Even then it seemed Les Ferdinand and Fowler were the secondary choices.

Legend of the English game don't get me wrong, but it's true that he wasn't as clinical at ManU.
