A $2500 car!

India's Tata Motors will on Thursday launch the world's cheapest motor car.

Aiming to enable more people in India and other developing nations to move up from two wheels to four, it will sell for 100,000 rupees or $2,500 (£1,277).

While exact details and even its name are still unknown, the vehicle, dubbed the "People's Car", is expected to have four seats and a 0.6 litre engine.

Although it seems a world apart from luxury Western cars, Tata is currently in talks to buy Jaguar and Land Rover.

Soaring sales

Tata's $2,500 car is being unveiled at the New Delhi motor show.

The product has rightfully gained a lot of international attention

Its release comes as India's domestic car market is predicted to soar in the coming years on the back of the country's fast-growing economy and increased consumer wealth.

Indian car sales are predicted to more than quadruple to $145bn by 2016.

Western firms such as Volkswagen and Ford are also rushing to increase their presence in India, as it represents a giant untapped market.

At present just seven people per 1,000 own a car in India, compared to 550 per 1,000 in Germany, or 476 per 1,000 in France.

"The product has rightfully gained a lot of international attention," said motoring analyst Mohit Arora of JD Power Asia-Pacific.

"It's a big, big deal for Tata Motors, and will be recorded in history books, whether or not it does well."

At the start of this year, US car giant Ford announced that Tata would be the likely buyer of its UK-based Jaguar and Land Rover luxury brands, reflecting the India company's global ambitions.

Imagine this car in US and Europe! Everyone did have one and imagine the pollution. I can't find any picture, it probably looks like one of those small Japanese cars.

I've seen it. sh*t-looking as hell. got a 30HP engine with the top speed of 70 KMH. No air-con, no stereo. the engine itself costs 700$. just a bit faster than walking, and more uncomfortable.

edit: and I really do wonder what would happen if a two-and-a-half tonne phaeton gets past near it with something like 200-220kmh in a highway.

You just make fool out yourself every time you post. What were you comparing that car with Ferrari? It has A/C. No one needs any stereo.....mp3 player is good enough. It is made for day to day commute and not for racing on highways or for showoff. An average middle class/lower middle class would buy that just to go to work and buy groceries instead of taking public transportation which is highly unreliable and stinky. It is a 4 seater so you can take your family to your relatives house. And no it won't fly away if a 5 ton truck passes at 100mph.

what an idiot, can you tell me where in my post was I comparing that car with a ferrari?

just to end, NO MIDDLE/LOWER MIDDLE class man would buy that car just to go to work ok? Things work different in other parts of the world.

meh.. i started off to a paragraph but everytime I start to type something, your sig catches my eyes :(

Why does everything that's indian have to be small?
Well I had an Indian takeaway the other day, and that certainly wasn't small, it was quite a sizeable portion of food for two quid! (H)

Anyway back on-topic, I wonder which would win a race, the Tata or the G-Whizz...... bloody hell 30BHP even a hairdryer is more powerful!

P.S. I'm surprised VanTheMan hasn't come in here uttering that f*cking B-word yet.

My neighbour drives a Tata car and it's so bloody slow. If I leave home just behind him, I overtake him on the junction where our road meets the main one. Yes, I overtake him, on a junction turning on to a road.

I hope he doesn't buy that - the 0.6l engine would make him an even slower driver than he is now :D

Haha nah its not Oliver, but in fact the notorious Trabant.

I got stuck behind one of them on a busy road years ago, the amount of sh*t it chucked out was nobody's business, mainly because it ran on a two-stroke engine that coughed a lot of smoke up. (H)

That looks absolutely fine to me, and I can see it doing alot of good in developing countries. I can also see it taking off to an extent in the west as a popular car for students and fresh drivers as it is cheap, safe and I imagine very cheap to insure. I wouldnt mind having one.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before either India or China succeeded in producing an effective mass produced cheap car and I congratulate India on their success and the economic prosperity this will bring them.

I also imagine suicide bombing would be quite difficult in such a car, a very sensible move from a country with Islamic enemies and a 35% Islamic population.
