It's impossible to answer.

Being the richer doesn't mean being the club who spends more money.

I think the richer club is Barcelona, not only for it's capacity for generating money, but also because it owns big terrains. It also maintains very competitive teams in other sports such as basketball (current european champions), handball, ... With a good managing we shouldn't have any economical problem in a few years.

Madrid is not that rich, but it has a huge capacity of generating money. It also has a basketball section although the board has sometimes though about eliminate it. The problem for Madrid is that they are not doing anything to control the debt. Instead of that they are spending more and more every year in new players and higher salaries. It’s the only club who doesn’t care at all about debt.

Other big clubs such as Valencia, Deportivo, … are already trying to control their numbers. Just look at last summer signings. They will be able to cope with any economical problems.

Clubs like Bilbao and real sociedad, I guess they have some debt, but they don't expend (or waste) much money on players. So they should be able to control their debt.

The problem may be for smaller clubs who may drop to second division.

So if I have to give 5 names, I would say: Barça, Madrid, and…. other big ones such as Valencia, Deportivo and… I don’t know who could be the 5th.

Being in this list doesn’t mean they are rich. It means they can afford bigger signings and salaries but they have to control their numbers

Im asking this because im curious but how come alot of these big time soccer clubs end up in debt? I mean do they not have any sort of Financial advisor to keep this from happening or what makes them spend money that they dont have? And teams like Real madrid that are said to be in debt but yet keep spending and spending.

Nope, it was Bin Laden who was supporting Real Madrid.

R.Madrid is not suppoted by any Government ...

Madrid City Hall bought some expensive terrains property of Real Madrid, so Barça fans just cry cause R.Madrid get money from it.

Barça fans always crying :) thats good ! thats mean Barça id sucking hard so they just insult R.Madrid cause Barça bought ton of sh*t players...

sad sad very sad ...

BTW saying Barça or Madrid are in debt is half-true. Just a silly example: I bought a car some months ago so im in debt with the Bank, i will pay the car in next 3 years, that does not mean i am out of money, and in the next year i will spend 900-1200 € in a new computer.

With Spanish clubs is the same, they are in debt, but they will get the money to pay that debts, and meanwhile they can buy expensive players although in the next years they must pay a lot of money to the Banks and that things... Is like my situation buying a car :)

Being in debt does not mean a team is in bankrupt... It just like when you buy a house or a car and you must pay money to the bank in the next years.

I don't know the situation in Spain, but I can tell you the 5 richest team in the Serie A: Chievo, Udinese, Siena, Juventus, Sampdoria. These are the ones without financial problems. Perugia has been generating profits for a long strike of years but they don't have any money left. Same for Empoli. Chievo and Udinese are generating small profits (I think), however they've no debt and are going well, with small salaries and good players. Sampdoria has been taken over in 2001 and they're quite rich, they've no debt but they're paying quite high wages. Siena is similar to Chievo and Udinese, although this is their first year in Serie A and it is yet to be seen if they can evolve in an Udinese or not. Juve was generating profits and paying out dividends from 1994 to 2002, this year they had to sell a terrain to a controlled society to create a quasi-fake profit that hasn't been paid out as dividend. Without their CL successes, they'll be probably in debt. Also, they (together with Milan and Inter) are earning almost 10 times the TV money other Serie A teams earn.

All the other teams are in enormous debt. Milan, Inter, Roma, Lazio, then all the others. All are hardly surviving. The worst are Roma and Lazio indeed, because they don't have the rich man behind them. They've still not gone bankrupt because of the banks making them survive. This happens both for political reasons (it's important to have Capitol teams in the Serie A) both for economical reasons (the banks have loaned out so much money to them that if Roma and Lazio go bankrupt, the very banks will go bankrupt, and this will be a serious problem for the Italian economy).

ummm, just from today press

two important enterprises (Repsol and Sacyr-vallhermoso) who were supposed to buy the towers that are going to be build in what it was madrid's terrains, now have forgotten or posponed this idea. The reason is that according the law there can not be towers higher than 110 meters in that area because it a emergency track for the airplanes using madrid's airport.

BUT OOOOOH SURPRISE, recently the goverment has changed temporaly this emergency track so towers can be build in this Real Madrid's sold terrains area.

real madrid supporters can read the article at todays edition of www.elperiodico.com. It was also on was on expansion.es

By the way Crusader, you forgot to mention that this terrain sold by Real madrid couldn't be sold as for "offices use" as it was considered for "sports and green use". But it was sold and paid (extremely well paid) as it was good for building towers.

So it was an illegal tranfer of public money to real madrid.

Being in debt is one thing and spending money is another-I mean budgets are always made available according to a club's debt, but it doesn't prevent them from buying players. It's almost like countries, who are almost all in debts, but they still spend money on weapons, science etc. Real Madrid and Barca are both in debt, but they still spent lots of cash to bring Beckham and Ronaldinho to their squads. When a club announces their yearly budget, a part of it goes to paying debts(some of them, anyway), some of it goes to transfers, some of it goes to other expenditure. So, it has to do with a club's priorities and overall income.
