2010 African Cup of Nations

And they won... :(

I'm really upset that there were no real surprises so far (in terms of qualifying): Angola, Algeria, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria. Anyway, one of Gabon and Zambia is going to the Quarter Finals. That will be my favourite.

another big day for Zambian football tomorrow ... I wasn't optimistic before the Tunisia match, and that performance was amazing ... I was a little optimistic against Cameroon, and that performance stunk up the place (the scoreline was more than a little flattering, even though the loss was only down to our goalkeeper gifting away 2 goals) ... so it is better to be a pessimist, and thereby avoid disappointment or receive a very pleasant surprise? I'm not the superstitious type, but it is hard not to hope ...

My favourite its Cote d'ivoire next rival, come back soon Yaya.
so, Algeria? CIV are certainly capable of failing to play to potential ... couple that with Algeria actually playing with any quality, and I guess there's a chance ...

Is really Kakonje worse than Mweene? I wouldn't believe this. I hope they start with Kakonje.
Anyway I really like Mulenga and Kalaba.

amazing! best night in zambian football since 1996 ... and if the calculations being posted are correct, then we may just have won the group of death!!

could it really be?! nigeria v zambia after all these years?! where's nigerianmiracle?

so the hosts are out, and Ghana are through ... no real surprise in the result ... but don't be fooled into thinking that Ghana cruised through ... Manucho had 3 GOLDEN chances that he spurned (including one with the keeper down, and the net essentially unguarded; that was unforgivable) ... Angola (well, one player really) wasted the opportunities that came, and they have to pay for it ...

Asamoah Gyan's goal was excellently taken ... the brilliant pass assist came from Kwadwo Asamoah, Udinese's impressive young midfielder, who will surely be on the radar of the big clubs after his Africa Cup showing ....

I only watched the last 15 minutes of extra time in the CIV-Algeria match (coz I was watching Inter-Milan instead) ... and in those 15 minutes, Algeria should have scored 3-4 goals; they were cutting through the Ivorians (who were desperately trying to get the ball to the other end) with too much ease, but really fluffed it in front of goal (there is contender for miss of the year amongst those too) ...

I saw the goals ... I've always liked and always wondered why Abdel-Kader Keïta isn't playing at bigger clubs (even as an impact player off the bench) ... I still can't find an answer ... he had a sublime assist for Drogba in the last match ... this time he found the net himself with an 89th minute screamer from 25 yards (which I'm sure they all thought was the winner) ...

after getting thumped by Malawi of all people in their opening match, Algeria find themselves in the semis, awaiting Egypt or hopefully Cameroon ... as long as they can carry this into the World Cup, and cause an upset in the Group Stage, I'm happy ...

CIV, meanwhile, underachieve once again ... hopefully they'll show more fight in the Group of Death at the World Cup ...

can't wait for Zambia v Naija ... apparently the weather tomorrow in Angola will be perfect for revenge ...

The English might have a bit more to think about in the World Cup than they expected.

Egypt undeservingly through ... Cameroon controlled the match, but decided to gift the game away ...

Kameni failed to deal with a speculative 35 yard effort to make it 1-1 ... then Geremi provided an excellent assist for Gedo to slot home for 2-1 Egypt a couple of minutes into extra time ...

the officials decided they did not want to be left out of giving charitable donations to Egypt, and awarded Ahmed Hassan his second goal of the match ... the ball clearly did not cross the line, and I don't know how the linesman saw it otherwise ...

Cameroon still have a lot to work on ... both in defence and attack ... they lack organization at the back ... and they lack creativity going forward -- Eto'o was dropping back to try and make something, and he took all the set-pieces (including corners) once Geremi was taken off; Samu needs to be in the box, waiting to finish the plays, not trying to orchestrate things far from goal ... the World Cup is a few months away ... they better sort their sh!t out within that time ...

a bit of a snooze-fest between Zambia and Nigeria ... the Naija boys dominated the possession, but they seem very sluggish/lazy/unmotivated ... slow build-ups can measured build-ups, but they were very uninspired going forward ... the best and really only chance was from outside the box, when Mikel warmed Mweene's hands -- and the keeper did very well to push it wide and away from danger ... there really has been nothing of note otherwise ...

Zambia have been very very cagey ... there is no way this can last for 90 minutes, let alone 120 minutes ... that would be a terrible gameplan regardless -- if the Nigerians wake up, it will be over in a flash ... having said that, the best chance of the match has come Zambia's way ... 16-year-old wingback Emmanuel Mbola did very well on the left, and found Chamanga in the middle ... but James failed to connect clearly, and sliced his touch wide ... it should have been 1-0; and on the 44th minute, that would have been psychologically significant ...

anyway, I expect Nigeria will want to come flying out of the gates in the second half, because that will set the tempo for the remainder of the match ... Zambia may want to attack straight away as well, to get the first goal again, and keep their noses ahead ... Vincent Enyeama, the Nigerian goalkeeper, has already had a couple of suspect moments in this match, and I would like to see the midfielders testing him with shots from range ...

Xifio

The Von Trapps
haha, really? Nigeria need to wake up, that's all ...

Zambia have started the half positively though, which is good to see ...

Xifio

The Von Trapps
we went oh so agonizingly close on so many occasions! knocking on the door for the entire second half ... can't believe we didn't score and end this in regulation time ... we definitely dominated the possession, and controlled the game very well ... Mbola has been impressive, as have Njobvu and Nyirenda, who were terrific in winning the ball back ...

don't know much the players have left in their legs ... fitness now a factor, as much as organization and skill ...

Xifio

The Von Trapps
painful to watch indeed ... i'd hate to see a nigerian sucker punch now ... it would be too difficult to take, especially with the effort put in so far ... i'd rather not deal with penalties though -- experience counts for a lot; zambia need a winner ...

oh dear ... appam off ...

Xifio

The Von Trapps
wow, martins had 2 chances to punish ... one from a gift, the other from a brilliant lob-pass from mikel ... is this destined for penalties?
