VOLZ SCORES 15,000TH PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL
Moritz Volz has written his name into the Premier League history books by scoring the 15,000th goal since the inception of the competition in August 1992.
The Fulham defender was on target to put his side 1-0 up in the Barclays Premiership clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this afternoon - only his second Premier League goal in his 103rd appearance.
PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL TIMELINE
And to celebrate the landmark strike, Barclays, title sponsor of the Barclays Premiership, will make a £15,000 donation to the club charity of the German.
In addition to the £15,000 charity donation, one lucky fan who correctly predicted the identity of the 15,000th scorer will now receive six VIP match tickets to watch the Barclays Premiership team of their choice and get the opportunity to present a special award to Volz.
PREMIER LEAGUE GOALS BY SEASON
Jim Hytner, Barclays marketing director, said: “The Barclays Premiership is widely regarded as the most exciting league in the world and one key reason for this is the number and quality of the goals that are scored every week.
“To reach 15,000 goals is an historic landmark that will be shared by Barclays Premiership fans the world over. This initiative celebrates such a feat, whilst benefiting a very worthy cause.”
Volz's goal came 14 years and four months after striker Brian Deane scored the competition’s first in Sheffield United's 2-1 win over Manchester United.
That proved only a minor setback for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, however, as they have since scored more goals than anyone and won eight titles in the process.
United scored 1,101 of the first 15,000 goals themselves, over 100 more than nearest challengers Arsenal.
They even managed 17 of those in just two games, beating Ipswich 9-0 in March 1995 and Nottingham Forest 8-1 in February 1999.
Newcastle United are the only other side to have netted at least eight in one match - their 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999.
Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers’ Alan Shearer is the most prolific goalscorer in Premier League history, having scored 260 before his retirement at the end of last season.
His closest challengers are Andy Cole (187), Thierry Henry (170) and Robbie Fowler (161), all of whom are still playing. Les Ferdinand, the fifth-highest scorer with 150, also holds the distinction of scoring the Premier League’s 10,000th goal.
Shearer’s 11 hat-tricks are also a record.
