What are your opinions on using them?
Personally I think it's arrogant to ask for banning them, but I feel the need to state that they are very annoying and currently are top of my list of things that might ruin the world cup experience. I don't mind if they are heard for brief moments, but it sounds like people are blowing these things for 90 whole minutes and it almost mutes the usual atmosphere we're used to in football matches.
I still can't wrap my head over the fact that people are paying loads of money to get tickets for the world cup only to blow a plastic trumpet for 90 minutes instead of cheering for their team or simply focusing on the football on the pitch in a once in 4 years occasion.
Also, what's with this crap that the "Vuvuzela is part of South African culture"? It certainly is not. It's just one of those things that gained popularity recently and people stuck with it and labeled it as part of their culture and a symbol of South Africa. If there are any South Africans on this forum, please correct me on this if I'm wrong.
I don't mind them being used when the local team is playing, but why are other fans forced to hear that giant beehive sound for 90 minutes in a match between, say, England and USA?
Let's hope this world cup will not be remembered as the "one with the annoying plastic trumpets".

very much so, it does really seem like some people are going to games and not even watching them, instead they just sit there blowing their f***ing vuvuzelas
whilst i think banning them would be a bit much, i wouldnt be sad if they did
i guess the difference in culture makes it hard for us to grasp why people want to blow a horn for 90 minutes regardless of what's happening on the pitch
i just hope most countries have brought good support with them to try and drown out the vuvuzelas with their voices

They are the most annoying thing I have ever seen at a sporting event and I really wish FIFA would've banned them for the tournament.

Beyond that, it boggles my mind that all of the idiots that are blowing on them for 90 f*****g minutes straight cannot step away from the situation and recognize how annoying they are and how much they negatively impact everyone's ability to enjoy watching the game.

LOL its just pathetic how you guys make so much fuss about Vuvuzelas. I know the atmosphere is better with the crowd and chants and vuvuzelas are annoying... but they won't ruin my WC experience. As long as I can watch the games I'm happy.

The shame is that after the tournament is over, fans from all over the world are going to look back on everything and the foremost thing they are going to remember about the South Africans is that they blow on those stupid annoying horns all day.

Btw here's the England Vs Platinum friendly game. The vuvuzelas weren't as prevalent as the confed games. You could hear the crowd louder than the vuvuzelas at times.

I'm from southern Africa (Zambia), not South Africa, so I can't speak on their behalf ... but far as we knew in Zed growing up in the mid 90s and early 00s, the vuvuzela was definitely a symbol of South African football ... in the late 90s, as satellite television grew, we knew of the South African soccer (they pronounce it "so-kah") terms including diski, shibobo, laduma and that horn thing, the vuvuzela ...

I also read somewhere that the Vuvuzela has been commercialized and became popular only around a decade ago. You can hardly call something that's been only recently popular as being ingrained in South African culture and part of South African history or am I missing something here?
My point is, I think the locals are defending it out of pride and the need to defend something that's theirs. The whole "culturally significant" talk about the Vuvuzelas seems to me as an excuse to make sure those things are not banned more than anything else.

Anyway, I think although it sounds way more annoying, it's really not that big a deal. People like to get their panties in a knot over something that is fairly trivial only because they aren't accustomed to it. I really doubt it'll be a big deal at all, at least for me.

After the Confederations Cup last year, a TON of my friends who traditionally weren't soccer fans but checked out the games (since the US made a good run) all reported that the horns were ridiculously annoying.

Think about it this way...this tournament is going to be the first time South Africa has been exposed to a lot of people...those annoying horns are not going to make a good first impression, and they will make a negative lasting impression.

I can just see people saying 'I tried to watch soccer but those f*****g horns were annoying me so I turned it off.'

I've seen a couple of games where they were a little subdued and in the background and it worked alright.

Also I don't have the EA World Cup game but from what I've seen they've integrated it in a bearable way too. They also have a special volume bar in the options just for the Vuvus, lol!

But I've also seen so many games where it's just been the most tedious thing. **** it being a "cultural" thing, it speaks the international language of annoying as hell.
