"MIAMI (AP) -- Romario is no closer to 1,000 goals after his first game with a minor league team.
The 40-year-old star, who helped lead Brazil to the 1994 World Cup, joined Miami F.C. of the United Soccer League two months ago in his quest to score 1,000 career goals. Romario entered Friday's game with 964.
Despite Romario's presence, Miami lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-0 in front of more than 3,000 fans at Tropical Park Stadium.
"It's normal that we didn't know each other well since this was my first game," Romario said. "But with more preparation and getting to know the players, things are going to improve."
Visa problems forced Romario to miss Miami's regular season opener against Montreal on April 23. He had also been sidelined because of a calf injury.
Romario had one serious scoring opportunity against Rochester. With three minutes remaining in the match an unmarked Romario mistimed Mario Rodriguez's cross from the right wing.
"It was a well placed ball by Mario," Romario said. "I couldn't get to the ball. Next time I will reach it."
Romario rarely touched the ball in the first half as his teammates failed to create scoring chances.
In a successful career, featuring stops in his native Brazil as well as in Spain and Holland, Romario was impressed with the play in the USL.
"Truthfully I did not expect to play against such a strong team like theirs," Romario said. "We have to recognize that all matches will be tough."
The Rhinos were thrilled to play against such a star.
"I was 12 years old when Romario was playing in the 1994 World Cup and have always admired him," said Rhinos defender Frankie Sanfilippo, who was one of four players responsible for defending Romario. "To be playing against one of the world's greatest players indeed was an honor."
So apparently he didnt score. I don't know if he can get 1000 goals at 40 years old. Right now he is on 964.
