"MIAMI (AP) -- Romario is no closer to 1,000 goals after his first game with a minor league team.

The 40-year-old star, who helped lead Brazil to the 1994 World Cup, joined Miami F.C. of the United Soccer League two months ago in his quest to score 1,000 career goals. Romario entered Friday's game with 964.

Despite Romario's presence, Miami lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-0 in front of more than 3,000 fans at Tropical Park Stadium.

"It's normal that we didn't know each other well since this was my first game," Romario said. "But with more preparation and getting to know the players, things are going to improve."

Visa problems forced Romario to miss Miami's regular season opener against Montreal on April 23. He had also been sidelined because of a calf injury.

Romario had one serious scoring opportunity against Rochester. With three minutes remaining in the match an unmarked Romario mistimed Mario Rodriguez's cross from the right wing.

"It was a well placed ball by Mario," Romario said. "I couldn't get to the ball. Next time I will reach it."

Romario rarely touched the ball in the first half as his teammates failed to create scoring chances.

In a successful career, featuring stops in his native Brazil as well as in Spain and Holland, Romario was impressed with the play in the USL.

"Truthfully I did not expect to play against such a strong team like theirs," Romario said. "We have to recognize that all matches will be tough."

The Rhinos were thrilled to play against such a star.

"I was 12 years old when Romario was playing in the 1994 World Cup and have always admired him," said Rhinos defender Frankie Sanfilippo, who was one of four players responsible for defending Romario. "To be playing against one of the world's greatest players indeed was an honor."

So apparently he didnt score. I don't know if he can get 1000 goals at 40 years old. Right now he is on 964.

Is the USL considered professional for him to ad tim his tally?

No, they get paid in hamburgers and chips.

Of course it's professional.

Well most USL players go to practice and then its off to their second job at UPS

Well, since those 957 (or 964) take in account goals he scored since he was an amateur, he'll count even if he plays against Soccer Mom's XI... his goal count is more like 883 in 1065 matches. Still impressive enough.

Hope he does well there, or at least get to know it's finally time to hang his boots...

Haha, the Rhinos owned him and the rest of the team, the Rhinos defense is pretty young and inexperiecned Frankie Sanfillipo and Scott Palguta who both had job of marking him are both starting their second season as a pro. Almsot every player has a second job, never make a living off of it. I knew a few onf the Rhinos players are also in the insurance business. Hopefully I will take some pictures of him when he plays here in Rochester.

He said he accepted Miami's deal so he could get better care for his daughter, she had downs.

You really can fault him for looking out for his kid.

And some USL players are paid quite well. I beleive he's pulling $5000/mo and an apartment on South Beach.

When (if) he reaches 999 he'll be loaned to Vasco, so he can score 1000 in a Vasco shirt.

He's got almost as much money as he has kids...

but if he really did move to Miami to get better treatment for his daughter, then all the best for him... but he still won't score 1000...

if he's still playing here in august and makes the trip to my local team then I'll definitely be there.. if for nothing else, just to say I've seen the man walk around the pitch.

Does anybody know if he's playing tonight? Was thinking of going but honestly i don't wanna spend 15-20 bux and then find out he had an ingrown toe-nail or something.

It's got zero promotion and the teams usually play in real hellholes (Miami is no exception), and people here can't grasp the concept of an independent "second division" as opposed to a top-flight controlled "minor league".

Rochester and Charleston do have stadiums though, Montreal, Atlanta and Vancouver are getting them. Rumors say Charlotte of the USL2 may be getting one too.
