The Football League announce that the 2-2 draw between Reading and Watford which featured a 'phantom' goal will not be replayed.

Linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for a goal instead of a corner when the ball crossed the goal-line well wide of the post during a goalmouth scramble from a corner at Vicarage Road.

Referee Stuart Attwell, who became the Premier League's youngest official last month at the age of 25, awarded a goal despite not a single Reading player appealing or celebrating the 'strike', which at the time was accredited to John Eustace as an own goal.

The match finished 2-2, denying Watford all three points.

Andy Williamson, the League's Chief Operating Officer, said: "The Laws of the Game give no discretion in these matters - the referee's decision regarding whether a goal is scored or not is final and binding. Given this explicit position, the League cannot intervene".

Earlier on Monday, Reading boss Steve Coppell (pictured) admitted he was willing to replay the match after reviewing the evidence.

"If the authorities decide a replay is the correct thing to do then I've got no objections whatsoever.

"I'm not sure there's a precedent but if that's what people decide then I am quite happy to do it.

"We don't want to be seen to be taking advantage of anything.

"I have sympathy with Watford and I really don't know what to say to make it right.

"But if the Football League phone me now and say something was definitely wrong I'm happy to go along with it."

The decision has been roundly condemned as the worst decision seen on a football pitch, a view backed up by Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt even though he has retained some sympathy for the officials.

Hunt said: "It was a screamer! No, it was probably the worst decision I have ever witnessed.

"We can't do anything about it. It's not our mistake, but what can you do? You can't say 'no ref, it wasn't in'.

"He seemed all right. He's a young referee. But after this he'll probably be sitting at home next week. I've had him before and he's been all right.

"It was just a bad day at the office. He talks, he respects you and you respect him. I can understand Watford's frustration, but everyone makes mistakes."

You gotta feel for the ref.

Yeah, from what I saw I blame no one but the FA. Anyone can make a mistake. But the decision not to replay is just daft, especially if both teams agreed to it.

Linesman needs to have his eyes checked. Not the ref's fault, thats what the assistant ref is there for. Unfortunately this linesman only assisted in making a horrible gaffe!!

I think replays are inevitable but how they are used is another question. Replays should only be used in goal-line incidents but should they take any stoppages? there's also the possibility of a technical error as well.

I think the linesman would have be better off not calling it a goal, if it really was a goal, rather than calling a goal when it wasn't.

Ok, the way I see it:
- Not the refs fault, he was advised it had gone in.
- And the Assistant ref is mostly to blame, but even then as said anyone can make a mistake. You can kind of see how he maybe was duped by the angle.

When it is this clear that a big mistake has been made, I don't get why players couldn't contest it there and then. Dealing with the situation with common sense AND adding the testimony of 1 or several Reading players to admit it was nowhere near to going in. It's surely not being idealistic to expect that when it's this obvious.

The ref could have simply overruled his linesman after that. Job done.

yet another reason why football needs to introduce a goal line ref. everyone starts acting like they've been snorting coke for 4 days straight when that is even mentioned though.

I dont think they need 2 whole new AR's, just video replaying in them situations, or maybe like they have in the tennis where they have the eagle eye thing and they have a certain numebr of disputes per game.

That assistant should be doing a few matches in the Bristol Downs league.

looks like Boothroyd is facing charges regarding remarks towards the "Phantom goal". The FA are seriously trying to make themselves look like absolute daft ghits. They all should be caned for considering this tame remark worthy of a chargeable outburst.

Absolutely ridiculous, I mean I know you shouldn't rant about a ref for anything really but you could really make an exception here...

The FA like to go out of their way to prove how impossibly stupid they are.

Ref gets promoted?

how the **** an he get promoted, i'm a Watford fan and was extremly annoyed. he also gave them a penalty after the ball had gone out for a goalkick

^ haha don't think that penalty he gave was a good decision either. How to pile it on in style!
