4-3-2-1 uh? I don't like it. 4-4-2 has been my ticket to the FM wonderland since CM4.
Also I dont like playing the best players in the game. I prefer starting with a small troubled club, then finding young talented and very cheap players and slowly climb as close to the top as possible. And yes this usually takes a lot more than 1 or 2 seasons.

Belive me I like to take smaller clubs to, I started at Dinamo Buc., in 2012 my first ECC final, 4 titles, 1 EC final, 2 Romanian Cup winners. I had players like Leon Andreasen(sold for 15m at Newcastle), Bogdan Stancu(sold for 15m at Barcelona), Aquino(sold for 9m+50%next sale, at Lille), Ivanchitz(sold for 7m at Ispwich), Pyatov, Alo Barengrub(Sold for 7m+50% at Zenit), etc.
My team now: Tim Krul,J.Faubert(13m),J.Vertoghen,Ricardo Costa(8,5m),Y.Oschypko,D. de Zeew(15m),Diakite,Torje,Danny,Marveaux,Le Tallec,M. Niculae,Romeo Castelen,Diestel Zola,Fabu,Mardare,Leonardo,Abalimba, and another young new Players like N.Pico(D RC) with a lot of atributes with 20

And is a 4-3-3 Normal, a little changed, the both wingers with arrows up and one MC with arrow at AMC (Elano)

with arrows from Dayro Moreno to FC, Toja to AMC (alongside Moreno), Petre to DM, Szekely and Yildirim to AM RL and Emeghara and Ogararu to WB RL. too bad I haven't got a decent striker. Bogdan Stancu may become one of the best in the game but in the first season he is not CL standard.

btw: Yildirim is a pretty decent right winter, perfect on set pieces and you can get him for free since he's out of contract.

I have a 31m/p.a budget for wages and at least 20m for transfers, I transfered players like aquino(2m) or poulpin and a lot others. I sold them with 10-15m . now I am in the same game at M.City.

This is the formation I use at the mo, seems to be doing the trick:
