I agree that 4:3:3 holding is a very good formation (it's roughly my preferred formation, too, I position my full backs very high, like same line as the holding midfielder). However for me (Legendary difficulty, normal speed) high aggression and pressing works best. I don't use quick tactics, hence stay at a neutral setting. The key to playing stronger teams is not to lose possession.

If you're playing a weaker team you often won't be able to stop your opponent's star players. Also if you let them get close to your penalty box you're more likely to get into those situations where several players fight for the ball in a very small space which leads to the well-known FIFA gameplay fuckups where your defender should have things under control but does not react to your input because there's too much going on, so the opponent's striker eventually scores.

This is why I try to attack even top class opponents in their own half if they have the ball and control the midfield. Like in real life football.

I was gonna say, what minute halves do you have the game set to? Because I play both halves on 4 minutes as it provides fast, seamless gameplay.

There's a few tricks.

First: don't be afraid to pass horizontally or back. Spaces will open up. When you're playing a low-rated team you will need to rely on risk-free passes more because your player's error rate will be higher. Be patient, try to drag the opposite defenders to one region so that there are gaps to exploit elsewhere. This is where a holding midfielder comes in perfectly, in particular if he has good vision and passing attributes. Vertical play can work, but you need to have a very good sense which passes will work and which will fail. You will lose the ball more often, and you'll need to regain possession.

Second: Aggressive pressing can help you to regain possession quickly if done well. But against top teams you will often need to hurry back to get your players behind the ball again.

Third: Use the "call a fellow player" button. In particular, when hurrying back you control a player somewhere in midfield or even an attacker, have him sprint back while all the time pressing the "call" button. This way you move not only one but two players back at high pace. While doing so, switch players when you feel you need more in your own half. You can also exploit the "call" button to have a CPU controlled player attack the ball while you position the player you control somewhere else in order to block passing channels. But this is a bit more risky and requires quite a bit of practice, so that often attacking a (better) opponent player with two is a bit better.

Bottom line: you need to get your passing optimised. Understand which passes work and which are more likely to fail. I usually play this style at least as long as I am not trailing at halftime or later.

Hi Harry, can you please sort this game freezing when I load a game. Because every time I load a game, the game freezes and I'm forced to shut it down using Task manager which becomes frustrating. Any way to fix this?

You're showing me a screenshot of Burnley vs Arsenal. An Arsenal player who is wearing the number 11 shirt that isn't Martinelli. Have you edited the database, or is this in Career mode?
Is it always Burnley, or is it other teams?
If it is only Burnley, and this is career mode, what players have Burnley added?
Have you added any facepacks?
What DB are you using?
I don't recognise the theme, is that one that was included in the mod?

This is very frustrating feedback. You don't have to show proof, it's not like I don't believe you.
You just have to answer the questions I ask.
None of you is giving me any information that I can use to resolve this.
Telling me you downloaded a theme from the forum doesn't help because I still have no idea what the theme is.

Yes, the player wearing a no. 11 shirt isn't primarily Martinelli because I sold him to to another club during the transfer window 3 seasons ago. No I did not edit the database other than change the soundtrack names and playlist links, and Burnley is not the reason why the game freezes when a game loads. I'm going to assume it might be the theme I'm using which is the theme made by Emran_ahm3d that I download when the beta was released. That's all I can say and assume, all I want is your input. (Bear in mind, this screenshot was taken while I was playing career mode).
