Honestly, I don't understand all this "affability" towards Ronaldinho. He was a great player but he lasted relatively little, a few seasons. There are champions who have played at most for 10 years, 15 years. Some even 20 years like Maldini, Giggs, Puskas, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldinho was a phenomenon for 4 seasons, maybe 2 really. Already the last year at Barcelona and the period at Milan had dropped a lot.
Recently, IFFHS released a list of the greatest 10 of all time.
Personnally, i loved Ronaldinho because it was the pure joy to watch him, but i didn't expect him on top 10.
of course, it's extremely difficult / impossible to compare players from different eras, and at a certain point, such lists are just an approach and seem to be a bit subjective,
for example, among top 10, Garrincha, Puskas, Eusébio, George Best, Michael Platini, Gerd Müller, Zico and others could also be in the discussion.
With Ronaldinho at least you could argue, that his football career was like the career of a rock star in a way that it should be judged by one's best performance rather than longevity.Honestly, I don't understand all this "affability" towards Ronaldinho. You're right... But I think that in Zidane's case, the fact that the French national team is at absolute levels has a big impact. Levels that it still maintains. Before Zidane, France was a ragtag army without a game logic and with many players who often played below expectations. Cantona, Ginola and Sauzee above all. I think this is also due to bad tactics. Zidane catalyzed France's game. Finally they knew who to pass the ball to XD I think this is crucial. I was never really enthusiastic about Kaka, honestly. Strong, very strong. But I saw Hagi, Laudurup, Baggio and if I wanted, even Zola and Francescoli do the same things. Maybe a little slower but the football they played was also slower. But if I had to choose my top 10, maybe Zidane wouldn't be there. With Ronaldinho at least you could argue, that his football career was like the career of a rock star in a way that it should be judged by one's best performance rather than longevity.
What I truly don't understand is Zinedine Zidane being in top 10 at 7th place, above Alfredo Di Stefano. Really?
Zidane was a wonderful player, but to be top 10, you'd either want a player which revolutionized the game or expect a player to have it all. It's arguable if Zidane is the best French player of all-time comparing to Kopa and especially Platini, let alone being in top 10 in expense of players like Muller, Yashin, Puskas, Maldini and higher than Di Stefano and Ronaldo.
Ronaldinho is flashy and truly unique. With Zidane you could find players like him before, like Laudrup or Baggio, or after, like Kaka or Iniesta.
I don't see the reason for elevation to the altars
Savicevic and Gascoigne when they wanted to play were very close to that Ronaldinho. They were a joy to watch. All three were spectacular. But all three of them didn't last long or often withdrew from the game. Three intermittent geniusesI started and finished footbal watching with MICHAEL OWEN... but RONALDINHO 2003-2009 was PELE... I Never seen, before and then football beauty like this
Although i won´t question the focus on pre XXI football for obvious reasons, i wanted to ask: why Best at 3? I know that he was great, but i wouldn´t say that he´s era defining. My 10.
1 Pele
2 Maradona
3 Best
4 Cruijff
5 Puskas
6 Di Stefano
7 Beckenbauer
8 Messi
9 Ronaldo
10 Platini
