I still refuse to acknowledge his tenure at Bayern as anything above a decent, solid achievement. Certainly not revolutionary or world beating.

Yeah it was just at Barca where he had worldclass players. 3 of the best players of their generation.

Sure, Pep's always had great squads to work with, and you're free to doubt if he'd do the same in a worse situation. Realistically, nobody would. Nobody's expected to take Arsenal with no money, and make them into a world beater. That doesn't happen. But you also can't just go "he hasn't won with a shit team, so he's shit". There's burden of proof there, too. So far he's mainly been really fucking successful with the things he's done. He's had good material to work with, but he's still exceeded a lot of expectations. Barca had a great squad, but somehow they didn't play well before Guardiola. You can't just assume it's automatic you win stuff with that squad, when it's just been proven otherwise.

Look at Klinsmann with Bayern. Shit coach and we nearly missed the CL. Look at Manchester United the last several years with so much talent and so much money invested in players. Look at Chelsea this season.

Winning is not automatic for anyone, and especially in the Champions League where the knockout format involves a lot of luck. Pep has made the Semis every season of his career.

There's a pretty big gap between being shit and being great. The question isn't whether Pep might be shit but if he might not be great.

Every other "great" manager has had failures with world beating squads. Pep has never had a bad season.

But really, it's his player development both technically and mentally that makes Pep so great, not his success on the pitch. As pathetic as it is, the state of modern football is such that Boateng can tell Pep on his first day that he never learned how to be a defender tactically aside from marking his man and holding the offside line. Anyone willing to work under Pep becomes an outstanding player, but Pep demands 100% dedication and running, which is why he falls out with high profile players like Zlatan at times.

Hell, Rafinha, RAFINHA, is a world class player right now. Certainly a top 10 right back in the world for me. That's not because of his time at Genoa.

None of that addresses the issues that are brought up against him. This is similar to Messi with Argentina. There are millions of reasons to consider him the best ever but until certain accomplishments are had there will always be a relatively legitimate asterisk next to his name. Like Hall of Famers who never win the big competitions in their field.

Except Pep has won everything. If you're waiting for him to take over Shrewsbury Town you may as well keep waiting. He did manage one season in the lower leagues. He achieved promotion.

Pep consistently has made average players into great players over his short managerial career. I have no doubt that he would run roughshod over the lower divisions where he is elevating his team's level of play while the rest of the managers just roll out balls and explain their tactics by writing an XI on the white board.

You're exagerrating. We do not mean teams like Shrewsbury town. We are talking about teams like Arsenal, Tottenham, Shalke or Atletico Madrid. I consider Simeone's achievement much higher than what Pep has ever done.

It's not higher, it's different. I would like to see Pep do it though.

Winning the league in a league which has Real Madrid and Barcelona and consistently challenging for the title with Atletico is more difficult, which is why I appreciate Simeone's achievement more than Josep.
