Zer0 Points for a 0 to 0 draws??

After Sepp Blatter ideas about removing extra time and maybe adding golden goal or going straight to penalty kicks, i think it would be a better idea to give teams No points if its a scoreless draw in the group stages or even in club league play. Yes ive seen many great nil-nil games but why should either team deserve a point if they didnt score a goal? Its not a crazy idea, everything would be the same except for the zero points for scoreless ties.

Damnit, I was sure this was a bot post.

So what happens when you lose? And maybe they deserve a point because they didn't concede a goal either.

If the team loses then its still 0 points. The only change would be getting 0 points for not scoring which would lead to more attacking football. I dont think you deserve a point for not conceding since that team didnt score a goal either. And yes if a weaker team gets 1 goal they would still bunker down and defend that one goal lead the entire game, but a 1 nil game is still better than 0 to 0 to the neutral fan lol.

Just because some nil-nil games are good to watch it doesn't mean they deserve a point for not scoring and ending the match with the same scoreline it began with. Anyways since you claim it's a dumb idea then explain what negative impact would zero points for a nil all draw have on the game or a tournament?

It will create a lack of balance in terms of attack and defense, the end-product meaning ****ty defenses and over-reliance on attack. And yes they do, not conceding is just as important as scoring, and it deserves to be prized. Not to mention that the basis of your is based solely on results.

People overvalue attack, a good defense is good to watch if you know how to appreciate it.

In many 0-0 games 1 side attacks and the other side parks the bus. You don't discourage the negative team by awarding 0 points for a 0-0 draw because they are still going to be even with the much better team.

I took the liberty of applying this rule to last seasons premier league (boredom) and it didn't really change much around, Liverpool and Everton swapped places, Sunderland climbed two places and Portsmouth swapped places with Hull at the bottom on GD. So seems pretty pointless to be quite honest.

I've always thought GD or GF should play a more important role in leagues or tournaments but adding a point for those would definitely unbalance things, although a point for GF in pre-season tournaments works nicely. Just to make bigger scorelines more meaningful though I've often thought maybe say awarding an extra point if three goals are scored in a game.

exactly!

if we had to promote attacking and scoring over everything else, i wouldn't mind seeing a point awarded for each goal scored, like in the Amsterdam Tournament (and the other pre-season copycat tournaments like the Emirates Cup) ... but IMO there's nothing wrong with the status quo, so ....

I was interested so I tried to see how my rule implementation would have affected the league as well so I knocked this up, not a great deal going on still, but quite interesting how City swap around with Spurs for the CL place. Again remember this is with all teams award an extra point for every 3 goals scored in a game.

The first column after the team name is how many times the club scored 3 goals or more in a game. The second column is the new points total, basically with the left number added on to the current total.

Where points are drawn, the tie is broken by GD

I don't want to see a point added for every goal. IMO it will take out some of the sportsmanship as Arsenal will seek to bang in 10 on Hull or whatever. Do not like it.

In a smaller tournament like the World Cup Group Stage... I guess it could work there, but I still don't want to watch some small nation's first World Cup game end in a 15-0 thrashing because GF is so important.

that's actually a very good reason to give 1 point for every goal, if indeed the disparity between teams can be that big ... I mean, if a team can score 10 or 15 in a match, but instead settles for controlling the match and riding out a 2-0 or 3-0 win, then the 'entertainment is being killed point' would be validly brought up ... if teams could really comfortably beat those "lesser teams" by 10 or 15 if those teams "tried", then that seriously brings the quality and the competitive level of the sport as a whole into question ...

but therein lies the point: while you seem convinced about the likelihood of 10 or 15 goals, I certainly am not ... I think teams get deflated after a few goals, coz the result is decided ... but if they knew a couple of goals for themselves could mean the difference between survival and relegation, they'd still be motivated to do something ... you know, there'd still be something to play for from their point of view (other than "avoiding humiliation / saving face", which isn't as powerful a motivation factor as the possibility of 1 or 2 points from 1 or 2 goals being a difference-maker for survival) ...

no, I think the reason I wouldn't want to see a point given for every goal is because a team may batter their opposition and only win 1-0, picking up 4 points; but then a team could lose 7-4, and still pick up 4 points ... the jettisoning of proper defensive organization being equally rewarded is what I don't really want to see ... defence is just as much a part of the game as offence ...

Man, I just wish that rule would've been applied in the Eredivisie last year. Reminiscent of our 106 goals scored. :(
