I would say, that it all depends on how much you like your current gf. If you had some little fight and decided to take a time off, it's not really a great reason to break up. But if you really like Clara, then why would you need a double date? You need to ask Clara out by yourself, without counselling any of your friends and go together somewhere without anybody else then. As for Maria being protective, i think that maybe she just want to be friends with you and Clara and for you two to be just friends as well. Because when people date, first of all they spend more time with each other alone and less time with their friends and then when they brake-up, they don't want to do anything together with each other, which again lives the friend that you share (eg. Maria) in a compromising situation of trying to see both of you only at different times. So Maria kind of losses when you go out with each other and when you break-up and don't want to see, hear or talk about each other.
I'm pretty sure we'd see more of Maria if I dated Clara.
The double date is needed because otherwise there's no way Clara will go out with me, since she saw me with my gf and I don't have her number. Maria would never give me Clara's number just like that.

At first I asked my friend to invite Clara to their house, you know, to spend a couple days and get over her loss (yes, inviting people to other people's homes... the nerve I have is amazing
), and maybe we could go out together, have dinner or something. It seemed a good idea on his part, but some how he never mentioned it again. We've been best friends for over 20 years - I know him quite well, and I sensed that if I insisted with him he might get in trouble with his gf. That's when I decided to approach Maria herself...

I agree that couples tend to get back after their relationship came to a sudden end, but I don't think it'll be the case here. They were preparing to get married and she was dumped. It was this serious already. Women especially fear rejection, even if their relationship is healthy to some extent; I bet Clara would love in her heart to get back with her ex, but doubt she'd do it, for fearing that the same would happen all over again.
Oh, and I'm the Denis Rodman of relationships, if you know what I mean.
Kudos if you actually have the stones to script such an approach like that. I think if I even hinted to that effect, a woman would die of laughter (under the assumption that I was joking....I hope)
