Student lands job running football team thanks to Football Manager on the computer

Vugar Huseynzade, a 21-year-old student from Sweden, landed the job at one of Azerbaijan's top football clubs - reportedly beating off big names including France legend Jean-Pierre Papin to the post - despite his only experience of managing a team being on his computer.

Yet that devotion to the virtual game - along with some work experience stint with a sports agency in the USA - were apparently enough to land him the job.

"I've always wanted to work in football and have played Football Manager since 2002," Huseynzade told Scandinavian newspaper Aftonbladet.

And it was in a thread you replied to!

I don't disagree.

The worst part is when I read the story I had absolutely no recollection of ever reading it before.

It's not related to football quality or level, connection and relationships are very important there to get high positions, there's a guy in our uni, he's 25 and is CEO of a large company and he studies in Australia ... you guess the rest.

The article states that he is of Azerbaijani origin and he went abroad to work so that makes more sense and the headline is more of a over-dramatization. The yahoo article mentions he worked for a sports agency in the US. And the dude was an assistant and secondary manager for the club beforehand.

I do sometimes wonder if real managers play Football Manager. Probably not.

I can imagine managers would either love it because they can do things in the virtual world that they could never do with their real teams, or absolutely hate it because it was so unrealistic and they got pissed off that they couldnt do those things for real.

AVB manages like a Football Manager player.

EDIT: So does Alan Pardew

What's that, downloads a good tactic from somewhere online, then goes on holidays loads?

Was it Sean_Denny here who once applied for the Irish job based on his Champ experience? Was a brilliant story of I recollect.
