You shouldn't have to pay to buy a new pad for FIFA and Direct Input

Yea they shouldnt, but I didnt mind, took me few minutes to search the forums and find the answer, and now the game works perfectly with my PS2 controller.

I would very much appreciate some info on how to edit the config file. I'm using a PS2 pad just like you. I've opened up the config.dat file using Notepad...... but all I get is a window full of rubbish!

I for one agree totally with acidagent , i can't get my usb gamepad pro to configure with fifa 2004, some of the buttons on the pad actually don't do anything when pressed, I bought a usb to ps2 device to enable me to use a ps2 pad for fifa 2004, but when you try to play with it the pad just carries on rumbling, i thought the sidewinder game pads were a very popular gamepad for pc users.

Here's my little note to EA :

SAITEK P3000 wireless - "I will not purchase FIFA 2004 until I know you will support my controller 100% for all aspects of gameplay. I also think you should print every possible button combination and what it does, not leaving us to guess at so called "special moves". "

You should send your notes to EA, not leave it at the forum. I wrote you what EA told me so you should send this problem to customer support ot to the devalopers you have addresses so go on.

goxy

yes, i sent it to EA as well...hopefully more people will join in with something similar.

I hope they do fix it, I use my controller with many other games including several EA sports and EA games why does FIFA not recognize it? Just plain dumb, but then again look at who we are dealing with.

I hope soo too. Thrustmaster and Saitek even Genius are very well companies and make great controllers (genisus sucks but they are cheap), so they have to support it. I don'y want to spend my money buying new controller especially not Logitech. I don't hate Logitech i just dony like their gamepads. They make cool mice and keyboards but I don't like their controllers. I preffer Thrustmaster or Saitek, bceuse they are ergonimacaly designed. Logitech hasn't controller ergonimicaly designed. Logitech Dual Action gamepad id copy from PSX and it's to small. Xbox have grat controllers and playing FIFA with them is real joy. I Hope EA will make patch to support other kind of controllers such as mine and yours, Saitek & Thrustmaster.

This is the response i received from the Support Team:

EA Response (Bill) 10/11/2003 08:26 PM
Hi Stuart.

We test and support FIFA 2004 with all the major 6 button game controllers. In the manual we provide links to Microsoft, Logitech, Saitek, Thrustmaster, Act Labs and Gravis. In no way do we support one controller manufacturer over another and we categorically do not code our games so that they will not function with a particular brand of controller.

My colleague here plays FIFA 2004 with a Microsoft Sidewinder with no problems at all. Perhaps if you let me know which controller you have, and what the problem is, I will be able to help you.

This is my reply:

Thanks for your reply. I understand that you do support the major game controller companies. I personally use a 2-Player EMS Adapter which allows me to use my PS2 pads on the PC. I know that the usual EA response to this is: “I’m afraid I can’t help you, this pad is not supported”

However after researching around I found out how to get my controller to be mapped.

1, Look at the config.dat. Find a “supported” controller
2, In the REGISTRY change the OEM name of the “generic” pad to a “supported” controller name found in the config.dat
3, Edit the config.dat to remap the buttons. This is the only way to do it, otherwise FIFA will crash in game while trying to remap the buttons.

I really can’t understand why people like me should have to do this. This really is the ONLY game on a PC I have to EDIT the REGISTRY and a text file to play FIFA with a “generic” pad. And I can only conclude that there IS some deal going on between Microsoft, Logitech, Saitek, Thrustmaster, Act Labs and Gravis. I know their names aren’t put in there for free.

Please read this part: If you look a MVP Baseball (EA), it handles controller configurations beautifully, please explain why FIFA (EA too) can’t integrate this code into the game. I know this is probably the wrong place to send my response, so please forward this email to the developers of FIFA and please feel free to put my methods above on the support and faqs for FIFA 04.

It’s not exactly user-friendly is it? MVP Baseball can support all sorts of "generic" controllers so why can't FIFA. That is the real question I would like to hear a response to.

Man I think they laying. Thrustmaster, Saitek and Genius are not supported by FIFA. I have Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Analog 32and and game hang up if I try remapping buttons. Should I try editing registry as a guy from the forum (Feferico) to make FIFA work fine and f***ed up (sorry for expression) other games. I will not do that.

i also have a thrustmaster firestorm 3 pad i cant configure it even with the patch.i think its a disgrace that FIFA have not included this basic option and i think it shows their arrogance.

anyone got a short walkthorugh on how to edit the config file to remap buttons for firestorm pro?

Well configuration option sucks. Even if you had Logitech Dual action gamepad which is recommendation from EA je couldnot configure it, because I saw that live. Same thing. Game hang up. But good thing with Logitech Dual Action is that button set as it should be.

2nd Reply from EA:

Hi Stuart.

Most of our games are developed by seperate, specialist studios. MVP Baseball and FIFA are not developed by the same studio. Unfortunately it isn't just as simple as copying and pasting the code from one game to another and it isn't fair or realistic to compare the two games in this way. I can only apologise that FIFA doesn't support your controller with out some editing of the registry but as you know, we cannot provide support for every controller.

None of the companies you list pay to appear in the manual - we also list video and sound card manufacturers and provide telephone numbers for Sony and Nintendo where appropriate. To assume that we do this for profit, rather than providing information that our customers will find useful, is wrong.

Im not going to read this all but there are dozens of controllers out there, and I have managed to get a ps2 style clone usb pad that works with FIFA. Its not a logitech pad so I dont see what the problem is. Its more likely a problem with teh driver for the gamepad and they way it is configured as I found with my old gamepad (saiktek p750)

You guys should also be asking the maker of your gamepad why it doenst work with FIFA. Most Direct 3D games will just use the axis and button mappings that are reported in the Windows control pannel joystick property screen.

I know Saitek has a support forum and so should other gamepad makers.

BTW other EA games also have problems with gamepads such as NHL 2004 so this is not exclusive to FIFA, and many other games have these problems.

You must look at all options when figuring out the problem.

Also if a registry edit is needed that suggest a problem with the driver unless you are changing the resistry in areas that FIFA is responsible for. Which one is it?

Hey everyone!

I was one of the first proud owners of a Thrustmaster dual power 3. Got it over a 1 year now and I'am dealing with the same problem. I bought the gamepad especially for Fifa 2003. Just to be able to use the Freestyle control at its best.

I have heard of the registry hack but I'am afraid other games I play will have troubles when I do so (PES3 demo for instance :D ). I mentiond this problem to EA during the Fifa 2003 era, but they couldn't do anything about it!. On the Thrustmaster site there was a note that the right analoge stick wasn't supported by Fifa 2003.

My hopes were set to Fifa 2004! But like many others i was really dissapointed that there was no support for the Thrustmaster gamepad in the demo! But i did buy the game in the hope the problem would be solved! And again i got dissapointed!

I just don't understand why EA left this magnifisant gamepad unsupported? As I read these forums more and more people are mentioning troubles with gamepads supported in Fifa 2004.

The only thing I can imagine is Money! EA is a company with a very good Marketing department and are only there for the money! Why dissapoint so many gamers?

I know now that I won't be playin Fifa 2004 that much. I wish I didn't bought the freekin :hump: game.

PES 3, here's another ex-Fifa fan !

I have a PS2 pad with the EMS2USB adapter. I make sure I don't use the drivers that came with the adapter but instead allow WInXP to detect and install it's own drivers. These show up as "16 button 4 Axis" in the game control panel.

Like most people even though these are XP drives and work flawlessly in every other game (NBA 2004, Fifa2003 (& can reconfigure)) the don't in Fifa 2004.

I've already sent an email to EA detailing my chagrin.

How do I go about remaping the buttons?
