There seems to be some sort of deal going on with Logitech and EA Sports Ca.
Games like MVP Baseball, NBA and NHL manage perfectly fine with other dual joystick gamepads.
1. Football is big market in Europe. EA FIFA is now established and so sells extremely well every year.
2. If EA and Logitech go into a deal together for the fifa games they can virtually exclude the rest of the controllers market and make a lot of money.
3. To Play Fifa on the PC, you really do need a Logitech pad. Logitech pay a fee to EA to "advertise" their pad.
4. EA "advertise" Logitech gamepads basically through dirty tactics. EA and Logitech collaborate to write a piece of code in FIFA that doesn't affect any of Logitech's products.
5.This piece of code when used with other gamepads restricts or make the pads "do funny things" (ie, constant rumbling, pausing the game every five seconds)
6. *Dirty Tactic* Customers unknowing of this code play the game think, my pad is rubbish, surely that Logitech pad won't mess up, there's even a picture of it in the game!!!!
7. This leads to the customer going out to the shop and buying Logitech. Plugs it in to play Fifa, works perfectly and then spreads the word about how "reliable" Logitech pads are.
8. I expect to see this sort of behaviour every year with EA, this is because it both makes them more money. Logitech pay money to advertise, Players who use gamepads are restricted to use Logitech. This in turn bumps Logitech's profits up cos people want to play fifa on a gamepad. So the next year Logitech pay more money for exclusive controller rights to EA and so on. All in one lovely money-munching circle.
9. EA wouldn't do it a special deal with Nvidia would they?
Have EA not heard of Direct Input? Just wondered. Cos it seems to be an important part to the modern games industry on PCs. Infact i think every new released game apart from FIFA uses it. What's the deal EA?
Having quite a bit of Direct Input knowledge i know it isn't that hard to cater for all sorts of game controllers and to remap the buttons and axes to the way YOU want.
FIFA is the only game ever i know to use this "supported" controller system. Even in other EA games you can use ANY controller and configure it the way YOU want. It's just seems odd that they've chose FIFA (which makes them a lot of money) to test this "supported" controller business. EA FIFA seem to make it as difficult as possible to use other types of game controllers, when they know how simple it is. Just look at the PES 3 demo, it's really simple to set up with ANY controller. Look at MVP Baseball, an EA game, look how easy it is to set up ANY controller. EA FIFA are having a laugh and making the profit with Logitech
EA please explain why Logitech is the right choice for the market, apart from Logitech paying you money? and explain why this only happens in the FIFA series.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this. I'm going to investigate more about whether something like this is illegal. Trust me, I really won't stop until i am able to play FIFA with full functionality with my non-Logitech gamepads. Come on, it's not that difficult, you can still sell Logitech pads without sabotaging other pads, product placement is enough.
