why won't they tackle?

my FM2005 game is seriously screwed up. When in 2d mode, my players never make a single tackle, except the ones they get yellow cards for! It makes the game completely unplayable as every time the opponent have an attack, my players just run along next to their players, or their players just run right through mine. Also my defenders who are on defensive and only close down in own area, constantly run out to close down strikers 30 yards or more from goal, leaving huge gaps in the defence! I won't even go into the rubbish shooting. Did they even play test this game?

is it like this for everyone? Cos if this is the game, well, SI can f**k off, they deserve shooting for releasing such a pile of s**t

they do tackle, but not in the 2D highlights because what would be the point of showing a highlight of your defender making a tackle? they only show KEY moments in the match, and a tackle isn't one of them unless it comes after the key moment

My defense always gets high ratings and concedes not many goals, Smertin is the key player in that part for me, tackling so often, though, never getting carded. So no probs for me, I play with 5.0.0 though, for reasons I will not mention.

well that's a bit silly really isn't it? I have mine on extended anyway, so i get highlights every 5 mins or so during the match, sometimes more often than that. It's completely unplayable because you could be up against a non league side, and if they decided to run with the ball, they could run from defense right up to attack and my players would do absolutely nothing. have tried changing every setting there is and it makes no difference. if this is how the game is meant to be, i won't be playing it again.

that's a good point, the demo wasn't like this. perhaps the new patch has ruined the game. i didnt actually notice any bugs in the "out of the box" version so maybe i should reinstall and forget about the patch.

have tried tackling on easy, normal and hard, i get about 6 yellows per match whatever its on, and the players still never make a successful tackle. the only time my team (man u) breaks up a move is by intercepting a bad pass. the opposing attacker has on occasion literally walked through about 3 players, right into the penalty box and then scored. i'm just uninstalling it now and will give it another go on 5.0.0 but if it's no better, i doubt i'll ever play it again, it makes me too angry and i'm VERY likely to break something.

Actually, you'll probably have to change the closing down and mentality settings of your defenders, and the depth of the defensive line, to get them to perform better.
I'm guessing your defenders wait until the last moment to approach the opposing attackers and midfielders. Thus increasing the chance of the defender fouling the opponent.

Just guessing, but that's what my tactic lacked the first 30-50 matches.

i had them on normal, with my defenders mentality set as far into defensive as it would go. i've restarted my game again now, and thus far i've only played friendlies, but i've seen a hell of a lot more tackles than i did in my last game, so hopefully it's sorted now.. i'll have to let you know once i get into the season.

ps, how is it i draw 2-2 with plymouth in a friendly, yet beat barcelona 4-0?? lol

Friendlies are friendlies... Mentality has to be real good for a player to perform well in a friendly against a lower team. And one player is no team.

i seem to be ok now. We gave arsenal a masterclass in how to play football. once i made sure henry and reyes weren't troubling me by playing slightly deeper and forgetting about the offside trap, it was a piece of cake.
