Flyer: don't you know little Russian? Well, if you can speak Ukrainian fluently, you can be considered AT LEAST knowing a little bit of Russian (though nearly half of fluent-Ukrainia speakers speak Russian fluently).
TO OTHERS: If you are learning Russian, you should face the odds you have of learning it.. Unless you are not an Eastern-European or FarEast Asian, or a 2-year old child, you will not learn the language thoroughly (but by NO means I am discouraging you).
PS. a good way to start learning a language is to start by learning the swear words. When I got born I said the equivalent of English: "sh!t" in russian.. and, of course, I learned the "f" and "sh" words LONG before I knew the language.. Always a good thing to start with
oh yeah. I speak Russian and English fluently, I can understand Ukrainian (sometimes), Belorussian (also sometimes), Polish, Czech (sometimes too), but cannot speak them.. J'etudier le Francais maintenant, j'ai etudie le Francais for one year now...

Flyer: not asking what you choose to do or not. "Could" is the key word, you can understand Russian, that's the point.
Philler: It is not bad.. We are not fighting, like in ISrael or Ireland, no way.. Only that ever since the USSR broke up Ukraine has been dependent on Russia all the way, that's for sure.. You don't know how Ukraine's economy fell after the Russian Economical Crisis in 1998, though Ukraine is recovering now..
if anything, Ukrainians MIGHT be still pissed about the Stalin times where millions and millions of Ukrainians starved to death.. But, after that, life in Ukraine normalized with Khruschev and Brezhnev coming in as secretaries of state (50s-70s), and I think there is no reason to be pissed over something that happened a long time ago... I mean I am not pissed at Germany for attacking us back in 40s, that's for sure...
