What's the difference between 'old positions' and 'new positions'?

I'm new to FM2006. I found FMScout doesn't show 'new positions' in its table list. And I also found 'new positions' are usually more strict for players' position settings. Then is 'new positions' necessary?

you mean "then is 'old positions' necessary".

well, the new position in the editors like FMScout must probably be from the training mode in the game in which you can train a player for whatever position you want..

I feel the new positions are more like player preference, or how at ease he is on that particular spot, where the old ones are more player ability. They combine to give the player's effectiveness in a certain position.
