WE8:I Demo Feedback

Well, after playing about 20 games on this with a friend today there are definitely some differences between PES4 and WE8:I on the PC.

(1) Handball is back!
Before you groan this is actually good news because I only had 4 or 5 handballs happen in all the games I played. I didn't know why a foul was called when it first happened but then the commentator says "and the referee has spotted a handball". It happens pretty rarely, less than once per game from what I played and adds to the realism I think because it's a definite part of the real game.
(2) Much smoother gameplay.
Although I have a decent enough graphics card (FX5700 Ultra) and PES4 PC runs pretty smoothly on a good resolution, it still stuttered a little for me (even without any patches) and wasn't always very smooth if I had anything at all running in the background. I actually compared the demo from PES4 too to see if it may just have been a problem with the full game. WE8:I runs super smooth on my machine even at the highest resolution which used to lag for me.
(3) Tripping over easily.
This too seems to have changed. I played 4 games of the PES4 demo and 4 games with the WE8:I demo with identical teams and tried to count the number of times players seemed to trip and fall with minimal contact too easily. After 4 games, PES4 totalled 27 while WE8:I totalled 5. This may just be coincidence but the balance of the players seems to have been affected within the core programming rather than the stats which haven't changed.

Anyway, that's all I've noticed. (1) and (2) made me happy and I'm hoping (3) isn't just a fluke but during the games I played with my friend it was noticeable by him too without me mentioning it as he has PES4 on his PC at home.

Not sure if anything else is different, I guess we'll have to wait until the final version. Here's hoping they've made the online a little smoother too.

So Wolf, do you think it is worth buying if you already have PES4? Will your upcoming patches work for both games?

I'm going to amend my 2005 patch to work with this game as soon as I get it.

As for worth buying if you already have PES4? Well, it might be if PES4 struggles to run very well on your PC or you love having handballs back! Other than that I really don't know, we'll have to see how the online experience is with it. Obviously the online will be at least the equivalent of PES4 with the first official patch applied and given the time they've had, I'd hope they've improved it.

I pre-ordered the game last week because I always have to have the latest version :) but I don't know if it's worth people in Europe updating unless there is some online improvement.

1. No.
2. Didn't notice any difference in the keepers. I did however score one great comical goal where I lobbed the keeper from about 45 yards, he scrambled back and gave up when he saw it was dropping in but it rebounded off the crossbar into his face and went in!
3. Yeah, the passing seems the same. I think part of this comes down to trying to make passes to players without adjusting the direction of the player so to pass instantly they have to use the outside of their good foot rather than using their weak foot (if their weak foot frequency stat is low).

It has the online icon in the demo in the menu just like PES4. Unless they've made a major major screw-up by leaving it in the menu I can't see that it would be wrong this close to release. They'd be no reason to take it out anyway unless they wanted to prevent people buying it and make them import/download PES4 instead!

4. are there the same camera angles?
5. does the replay button get immediately grey after ball goes out?
6. is there any Anti Aliasing support this time?

Hmm..that's even more strange...

the funny thing is that there is absolutely no mention of
online play on their website....it's totally omitted from
the features of the game.
You would think they could make a passing mention of it
considering it is one of the most wanted features.

I guess we'll find out in a few days.

I'm really looking forward to this release as I've played a few more games on the highest resolution and it runs so smooth it's great. Absolutely flawless even with a bunch of stuff running in the background.

I can confirm the smoother gameplay of WE8I
even on my "old-thing" 800MHZ it runs a little better than PES4!
(in the limits of the things considering my PC)
obviously i need to remove stuff in background eheh (H)

confirmed also less stupid fouls for easy "falling" of players.

Pity for the keepers...
they could at least do something.
