WC Qualifying Play-off

Islanda 0-0 Croatia
Portugal 1-0 Sweden (CR7 82')
Ukraine 2-0 France (Zozulya 63', Yarmolenko 82')
Greece 3-1 :( Romania (Mitroglou 14' 66' Salpingidis 21' / B. Stancu 19')

Maybe a World Cup without Ibra, Ribery and Benzema. So sad because of the football changes... What do you think about these matches and what will happen in the 2nd game?

I expect Croatia to win easily at home, cause a draw wouldn't do for them.
Sweden basically need to win by a two-goal margin and it's not impossible, but the scales are leaning towards Portugal imo.
One goal behind for France would've been somewhat acceptable but two is disturbing. They must give a stunning performance to go the finals.
Greece are outperforming the Romanians, so I don't see a 2-0 or better Romanian win.

Well, so much for that. Stupid game, ruined my whole fucking weekend.

I need to vent with a fellow Romanian.

To be honest I'm not even that upset now, I don't think a team like that should go to the world cup so it's not that sad.

I'm Romanian too, but the NT doesn't deserve at all to go to the World Cup. And there are many causes :
1. It's hardly to imagine that in Romania there aren't transfer fees, but this is real, because of the poverty that is here. Last year, 5 2nd division were dissoluted during the championship because there was no money to maintain them, and there are many teams on the brink even in Liga 1. The teams here are only "buying" free agents players.
2. A player like Saviola or Weiss could never want to play here in Romania, how they do in Greece for Olyimpiacos. First, because the wages are limited in Romania (somewhere at 300.000-400.000 euros, nothing more than that).
4. You didn't see that I jumped over point 3. :))
5. The poor mentality of the people/players here. Maybe we and Greeks are two teams with nasty style of play, but more embarassing than us they can't...

The only way to see Romania in Brazil 2014 is to come Netherlands and play for us in the 2nd game. :))
Anyway, considering that we were in the 4th valoric ... (I can't find the word :))) at the draw of the groups, nea' Piti' did an amazing job surpassing Turkey ang Hungary in our group.

why no hope for second leg?
Greece is not an amazing team, but we need to recognize that they are better than us at every chapter. However, I keep some hopes for the 2nd leg. But even we'll stay at home 4 more years, the people here should understand that this is not a tragedy. Next year will be 16 years since the last World Cup at we participated, but in 1990, when Romania went within the Round of 16, there were 20 years since the last participation at a World Cup (Mexico 70').

Netherlands weren't so great today against Japan, but I get your point. :D

And btw, in 2008/09, in Bulgaria, the second division had two leagues (East/West) with 16 teams each; in 2010/11 they were reduced to 12 each; 2011/12 - 10 each; and last year they merged the two leagues into one with 14 teams; AND this year, six teams couldn't participate in it and were either dissoluted or administratively relegated to third division (which was good for my city's team cause it replaced one of the relegated teams). In the top league, the situation is better with some teams showing signs of decent football over the years. However, that's not converted into any serious development for the national squad as you have probably noticed how disappointingly we ended our WC campaign (although the promising start)

A similar thing is hapenning in Romania. 2 years ago, we had 2 series, 16 teams each. Last year some teams got dissolved and with our complicate and incomprehensible style, this year they made 2 series with 12 clubs each, with Play-Off for promovation for the first 6 teams and Play-Out for the others. Also, last year, they wanted a similar thing as happened in Bulgaria, but it has not been materialized. Now the Federation wants to reduce the number of teams from the first division from 18 to 16 or 14, to increase the money from the TV rights for each team and improve their financial status.

How much time can Olympiakos still keep Mitroglou?
I like his style of play. He's tall, strong, fast, and a real poacher. 21 goals in 17 matches. "Pretty nice". I see that teams like Liverpool, Arsenal and Dortmund are interested in him.

Konstantinos "Kostas" Mitroglou

2011–2012 → Atromitos (loan) 28 (16)

National team
2005–2007 Greece U19 14 (12)
2007–2010 Greece U21 16 (5)
2009– Greece 27 (7)

O-car

Starting XI
I expect Croatia to win it on Tuesday, but we did show last night that we can take the fight to them. Not only was the ref having an incredibly off day to the point of seeming really biased towards Croatia at times, but we also lost our star striker in the first half, and played a man down for most of the second one.
Going into the second leg in this position, having kept a clean sheet at home and knowing there's still everything to play for, the Icelanders won't be pushovers here. They will give them everything they've got, and in that mode they can do wonders.
I expect Croatia to take this, but a part of me is kinda optimistic though

Eidur Gudjohnsen has to grace a WC.

Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!

France can overturn the 2-0 deficit at home, Romania have to get the same score line to qualify and Portugal will make it too I think. Zlatan will score and it'll go to pens.

My predictions for the second legs:

Croatia 2 - 0 Iceland
France 2 - 1 Ukraine (in extra time)
Sweden 1 - 0 Portugal (Sweden through on pens)
Romania 1 - 0 Greece (Greece park the bus)

If the two teams are level after 90 mins on agregate in the 2nd leg shouldn't it just go straight to pens?

Unfair red for Mandzukic, means he'll miss some of the world cup if Croatia go through.

They're one goal up but now the game is very interesting!

Romania stinking it up, down one nothing. At the end of the half a fan threw some sort of flair or explosion by the Greek goalie. Will be lucky if the game continues.

Mitroglou > Romania
