Video Games Adaptations - 2006/07 Edition -

Shiryu

Senior Squad
Ok, so there will be a ton of Movies based on original concepts taken from video games this year. So instead of having a thread for every single one, let's just throw them all in here. Most of them won't be good at all, so this should be fine.

The year already started with what I think will be the uncontested winner of this year's Razzie, Bloodrayne.
Save yourself on looking for the thread, it was garbage.

Still to come though are:

SpyHunter - IMDB Link

Starting:
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Director:
John Woo.

Story:
"Dwayne Johnson stars as Alec Sects, an ex-fighter pilot recruited to join a secret government unit called the "Spy Hunters." As one would expect, the Spy Hunters are equipped with experimental super-cars tricked out with all sorts of high-tech weaponry and state-of-the-art countermeasures."

Comments:
Not alot is known about this film, only that it could be released this year, though IMDB has it as 2007. Woo is working on a video game right now, so it could be true.

DOA: Dead or Alive
- IMDB Link

Starting:
Devon Aoki
Sarah Carter (Who?)
Collin Chou (Better known as "Seraph" from the Matrix)
Director:
Corey Yuen - Made Jet Li's "The Enforcer".

Story:
"The movie adaptation of the best selling video game series Dead or Alive."
Err, you can call that a story...
Pictures:

Comments:
Safe to say, it's looking bad. Mortal Kombat Redux.

*Silent Hill - IMDB Link

Starting:
Radha Mitchell - "Man on Fire", "Pitch Black".
Director:
Christophe Gans

Story:
"Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill. Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter's silhouette all over town. It's soon clear the town is not like any place she's ever been."

Director's Interview
Still of Pyramidhead (from movie)

Comments:
I really am waiting for this movie, I'm a huge fan of the series, and this is looking real good. If you read the interview you can clearly see that the director is a hardcore fan, and has done everything possible to keep the film as true to the source as possible while making this not just another Resident Evil, but a real story with belivable characters.

Quote: "One guarantee that fans can have, is that it's much easier to adapt Doom, even if it is a disaster, as we've seen a month before, then adapt Silent Hill. If you want to adapt Silent Hill, and you're not ready to face all of the complexity of the story, it's just too much. For a lazy director, like the one who directed Doom, simply Silent Hill would be too big of a piece to swallow. I dreamed of adapting this game when I first started playing Silent Hill six years ago. I prepared myself for six years to do this job, knowing that every fan in the world would wait for me with an axe. I will be sniped when I go to buy my games at my favorite store if I do a bad job. And I understand that, I'm a fan of the game myself...I admire the work of Akira and his friends, and I feel very much like someone who joined the group and tried to transport that amazing piece of art into a different medium."

Oh, and click on the still link!

Resident Evil: Extinction - IMDB Link

Starting:
Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine)
Milla Jovovich
Director:
Russell Mulcahy - "Highlander"

Story:
"It will be set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with mutant zombies. The film will play in the Nevada desert with the Aussie outback standing in for the American wasteland. The third film will likely to set up the fourth installment, in which the action shifts to Japan."

Comments: If this comes close to RE:1, it should be a good B-Horror movie. If it follows RE:2, then it's doomed. (Get it?)

Ok, I'll search for more later, you guys post any you know of.

That Nice Guy
good thread bud, very interesting. Didnt know they were making a Spy Hunter game........

Anyway, IMDB has Halo as 2007; which is disapointing.

not another Resident Evil :(

Silent Hill might turn out half decent as it's written by Roger Avary.

Am I the only one that thinks, if done properly, Max Payne would make a good basis for a movie script?

Oh yeah, it would be a hell of a movie.
Imagine those monologues (sp?) of Max, thinking of what happened and what there is to do. That would be a damn awesome movie. But I guess we can always dream...

i heard Jerry Bruckeimer is working on Ubisoft's Prince of Persia :|

from GameSpot

Prince of Persia movie gets screenwriter

Nearly two years after it was first revealed, it appears the Prince of Persia movie is moving forward. Respected underground film-news Web site Dark Horizons is reporting that screenwriter Jeffrey Nachmanoff has signed on to the project, which is being produced by Hollywood uberproducer Jerry Bruckheimer. Besides the 1993 short The Big Gig, Nachmanoff's sole screenwriting credit is the 2004 eco-disaster film The Day After Tomorrow, directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, the 1998 Godzilla remake). No release date for the big-screen adaptation of the Ubisoft action-platformer has been set, and no actors or director have signed on to the project.

More:

Fatal Frame: The Movie - IMDB Link

Starting:
Courtney Webb (Who?)
Director:
?

Story:
"The film follows Miku, a girl searching for her brother, a reporter who goes missing while working on a story about a haunted mansion where three grisly murders took place. Miku is armed only with a Polaroid camera. To stop the evil spirits she must photograph them, exposing them to a bright flash of light and capturing them inside the camera"

Comments: Ok, so this will be a film that's based on a game that in turn is based on J-Horror films. Well ain't that genious!

Driver - IMDB Link

Starting:

?
Director:
?

Story:
"An undercover cop named Tanner posing as a getaway driver risks his life in order to infiltrate a crime ring based in four of America's biggest cities."

Comments:
No news have been heard on this one recently, so its possible it was canned. The story concept was good thought, executed right, it could be good.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - IMDB Link (Video Game)

Starting:
?
Director:
?

Story: "In the year 2000, college student Alex Roivas is called back to her grandfather's mansion when she discovers he has been horribly murdered. During her search for answers, she comes across the Tome of Eternal Darkness, a demonic book that describes the fate of all those who came across it. The tale begins in 33 B.C., when Roman General Pious Augustus sold his soul to an elder god. Each subsequent tale explores how 11 others, including a Cambodian dancing girl from the A.D. 1100s, an Inquisition era monk, a World War I journalist, previous members of the Roivas line and even Alex herself come to encounter and take part in the maddening fight against the eternal darkness."

Comments:
This is yet another title with a solid storyline and complex characters. Nintendo is backing this one up, so it might be done right, who knows.

Ok, here comes the Biggie.

Halo - IMDB Link

Starting:
?
Director:
Guillermo del Toro - "Hellboy", "Blade II"
Executive Producer:
Peter Carlos*son!!!
Writer:
Alex Garland - "28 Days Later"

Story: "On a planet known as Halo, Master Chief and his band of human soldiers risk their lives to halt a takeover by the Convenant, a conglomerate of alien races."

Comments: This has got just inmmense backing, with millions of dollars behind it. From Microsoft, Universal, Fox, and Weta Digital who have just a fantastic record when it comes to special effects. Check out their works here: http://www.wetaworkshop.co.nz/projects/filmography/film. That's pretty impressive, I was really excited when they announced they were working on Evangelion a while back, and some of the concept art for that was excellent, they will do a good job with this one.
Done right, with a good storyline (not a la "Wing Commander"), "King Kong" like special effects, and Peter Carlos*son's image to back it, it could be big.

Wouldn't it just be Sin City with a Cop story though?

I love the Original game, they could slowly show the story in episodes.
First he's a good cop fighting drugs, then his wife and child get killed, then he becomes crazy and starts fighting and killing the dealers left and right, and as the film continues he becomes more and more deranged, and starts to make links between politicians and the mafia, and kills everyone in a lunatic spread and ends up insane. All this narrated only through internal monologue, and the occasional storyboards.
Ah, It would be sweet...I must agree.

Really looking forward to Silent Hill: a grand game that deserves a grand movie.
Fatal Frame (big fan of the games) would be awesome too if they keep faithfull to the originality of the game *and of course if they decide to make the movie*
