US uni/college recommendations

Hey guys. I'm planning to study in the US when I've finished high school here (autumn 2006 most likely).

What I'd like is some recommendations from you guys of good schools in the New York City/Long Island area. I don't think housing is a problem because I can probably arrange something with some friends who live in Syosset.

I've been looking around, but I have no idea what to look for in the first place. I hear GPAs aren't very important for international students like myself, with SAT scores being prioritised. Is this true?

I'm just looking for solid unis that can cater to my needs. I plan to major in Economics. Does anyone know much about the SUNY at Stony Brook? Adelphi Uni? What about the CUNY campuses? I've been searching at the Collegeboard site, and the university websites as well, but I'd like some more information of what they're like.

Any information would be mucho appreciated seeing as I haven't the faintest idea of what to expect. Ta guys.

SAT scores might be helpful but mostly its just doing well on the application they send you,and in the interview.try getting information from some schools your interested in.most colleges have websites where you can request information and they send it to your house, there very imformative.

this is my last year in school too, but the thing is that i am going to cuny. and sat scores r the must. u should get over 1020 for good college. adelphi uni is good. if u looking for cuny colleges i think Baruch College is the best for economics. there r other good colleges too, like City College, College of Staten Island but it is far,
Hunter College, and Queens College. and i think being a foreigner u need to pass an english test. there r some community colleges too, but it has Associate degree programs.:)

Thanks. I'm looking at SUNY Stony Brook or Adelphi. I can get around a 1200~1250 SAT, probably more if I study harder, and the English test (TOEFL) is no problem, I got full marks in that. You reckon they'd be enough for those colleges? I'm aware that Adelphi have listed a 1050ish score as being considered for a merit scholarship, and a full scholarship would help a lot.

What about the CUNY campuses? Know much about them?

And would the fact that I've received comprehensive education in two different countries be a plus? Or would that not matter?

And about the towns themselves... does anyone know much about Garden City or Stony Brook? Quiet? Loud? Busy?

**** all that. If you can get a good SAT score go to NYU, or if you really snap Columbia.

ShiftyPowers's right. I don't know why your considering Stony Brook. I've heard nothing but bad things about that school. Not only is it a party school, but the academics there suck. I don't really know anything about Adelphi, so I can't pass judgement on that school.

Really? Must cross that one off the list then. :crazyboy:

Can you recommend one in the area I've mentioned that's a good alternative to NYU? Somewhere I could be accepted with my SAT scores (which could be better). I was thinking about Stony Brook because it was 98th(?) in the college rankings or summat (could mean nothing), and it was relatively close to where I'd be staying.

Again, I know fuckall so far and everything I've said above could mean nothing so it'd be helpful to get some concrete advice from people who know about this stuff. Thanks.

i donot know about the suny's that much, but the campus of some cuny colleges r good and they r cheaper than suny because they have less tution fees. i think they will just look for were u studied in high school. i dont about the towns, which borough's r the towns in???

r u guys shi.ting me? in my skool u cud get into queens with an 85 average (lowest classes) and like 1000 on SAT. baruch even easier. those skools, no offense, arent the best skools in this area at all. even NYU, which is fairly good, isnt soo great. if ur smart enough, go for cooper union (in the city)... my bro goes there and its an excellent skool while having no fees (just a 700$ sign-on fee or sometin like that + maybe 1000 of dorming)

I live in NY, am a HS senior, and didn't apply to any SUNYs. I probably could have gotten into all of them, but I really want to leave the state. Hopefully I get a decent financial aid package somewhere or I'll have to take out loans, but I would prefer taking out loans at a school I want to go to (even if it is considered to be worse than Binghamton, I applied to a bunch that are but I think about more than just rankings. Arizona is pretty high on my list even though I know I'm a lock to get in) than not take out loans and be stuck at a SUNY.

If you are going to live in Syosset, anything in NYC is going to be a long commute. Also, Stony Brook isn't exactly right next to Syosset although the commute is probably doable. If you have to go to school on Long Island, Stony Brook is definitely your best bet. The second best school on the island is probably Hofstra. However, neither of them are as good as a bunch of schools in NYC. NYU, Columbia, and Fordham are a lot better. You should really look into Fordham. It's a Jesuit school but the religious influence in minimal. There are no religious requirements and lots of kids who aren't religious and it isn't as hard to get into as NYU or Columbia.

Cooper Union only has a few majors. If you don't want to study engineering or a few other things (I think it's architecture and something else), then you can't go there.

Good suggestion, Fordham's a good school.

Thanks for that, appreciate it. (Y) Yeah, I understand it would be a bit of a difficult daily trip if it was in NYC (an hour's drive, I think?). I recall there was a railroad system on Long Island that connected most cities or something?

And Fordham... the religious thing doesn't bother me because I'm Catholic myself, but the distance thing... would it be worth taking a school in NYC (and take the long commute) over somewhere like Stony Brook?

Oh and, do you know anything about Adelphi?

i dont think it is worth coming and taking such a long trips, and if u taking LI railroad, it is expensive than the MTA(which is common in NYC).
