UEFA C.L- Platini's PLAN

NYON, March 14 (UEFA) - UEFA president Michel Platini on Wednesday spelt out his plans for a new era in European football including a proposal for 'play-offs' for Champions League qualification.

Platini is proposing a new final qualifying round where there could be play-off-style matches, where the lowest-placed qualifiers from England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Portugal would play against each other.

The current system works on seeding, meaning clubs from the major leagues usually avoid each other in the final qualifying round and have easier games against smaller teams.

Platini said: 'It's not about disturbing England, Italy or Spain, but about finding a good balance.

'My problem is that the two English, Spanish and Italian teams in the final qualifying round do not play against each other, they play against smaller teams.

'Perhaps the teams from the bigger countries, who have four and three qualifying teams, should play against each other.

'We want to add some of the other countries to the competition and to do that we have take some of the others away. I'm not sure that the fourth clubs from Spain, Italy and England are more important than the champions of Poland, the Czech Republic and Denmark.'

what yall think, i thinks its interesting but in all honesty a 4th place team in the italian, english, spanish leagues are better than the champions in denmark and Czech like for e.g Arsenal are likely to be 4th place and they'd make the C.L more comptetitive and why change something already very successful...but the argument rich get richer poor get poorer, so wat yall think

I like it too.

Maybe for once an actual CHAMPIONS League.

and that says a lot coming from a supporter of an english team who might not qualify if the new rules come into places.

I can't wait to see F91 Düdelingen playing Red Bull Salzburg in the quarterfinals of the CL. Should be two cracking matches.

Who elected this moron again? He's on pace to ruin the greatest club football competition on earth.

well it is GOOD for the small nations but it will make the competition WEAKER, who wants to watch a potential quarterfinal of Barca Vs Levski , i mean didnt Barca beat them like 5 - 0

Palermo would get the crap kicked out of them by whoever finishes 3rd or 4th in Spain or England. Copenhagen or Celtic would probably put up a decent fight.

I'm all for it (Y) It could give the smaller competitions a great opportunity to grow and it would make it much more interesting for all people in Europe. I think people from countries with a small competition are now more tempted to support a team like Man Utd, Barcelona or any team from a big time league, but this would also be encouraging for them to start support a team from their own country and be proud of it when they play on the big stage

It might take a few years to work , but I think once the CL money is spread around , clubs from smaller leagues would be more comptetive. It will be interesting what effect this has on the various leagues , it might lead to some of the smaller leagues being dominated by one team.

Yeah, I was gonna say, as long as the big clubs from the big leagues still have the money not much will change. The smaller teams will still be sacrificial lambs for the most part and the later rounds will be no different than they are now.

Sometimes I miss the old Champions Cup, but to be realistic the product was nowhere near as good as it is today. Especially for the fans sitting at home watching on tv...

Giving the nr.4 from a country even the chance to compete in the CL is absurd. This would be a step in the right direction.

I dont like it.

Isnt that the reason why the UEFA cup exist?, to give small countries clubs some decent international competition?

Not to mention that the money that is generated from the UEFA Cup doesn't even begin to compare with CL dough.

I like some of his proposals though:

  • Preventing European clubs from signing players who are still owned by agents or companies.

  • Having tougher penalties for players who damage the image of the game by becoming involved in unsavoury incidents such as mass brawls.

  • Backing the introduction of a rule where clubs can only spend a percentage of their turnover on player wages and transfers.

  • Encouraging referees to abandon matches where there is overt racist abuse.

But where's the money going to come from? TV stations would pay significantly less if smaller teams replaced some of the European powerhouses.
