Top players in soccer skills contest.

SOME of the world's top footballers are to star in a ground-breaking soccer skills contest.

Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard, 29, and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, 22, will join rivals in the TV challenge - to be staged in front of 20,000 fans just after the World Cup.

Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo are also in the frame to compete - along with Valencia's David Villa and Didier Drogba of Chelsea.

The contest, to be held on July 17 at London's O2 Arena, will test skills such as control, strike power and goal scoring.

Organisers of the £10million event hope it will become an annual show to tour the world. A "major name" from football is said to be in talks to be host.

A source for the ITV1 show said: "This is like nothing you've ever seen.

"The world's best players come together for a pure skills test.

"As it's happening after the World Cup, they may well use some of its great shots and crosses to influence the challenges."

Meanwhile Gerrard's wife Alex Curran, 27, was spotted wearing her engagement and wedding rings yesterday - after appearing without them in public on Friday.

A pal said: "There was nothing in it.

"She'd been for a spray tan earlier in the day and had to leave her rings off."

tell me about it. I cant stop reading the damn thing though. I think its page 3 :innocent_smile_1:

interesting prospect though, watching the top players of the world going at it against each other, Rooney, Ronaldo, Messi etc. Would be cool if only a bit of fun.

On ITV though, would be such a cheesy show, probably with Ian Wright presenting it and in a format not dissimilar that bilge Vernon Kay presented where someone would challenge an athlete. I can't wait to mock how much of a farce this show is going to be.

Wonder if that's the main reason it's still around..

That's a real shame that ITV does things like that - a world skills competition would be amazing to see, every football fan on the planet would love to see it - perhaps they could make it part of the festivities for the World Cup draw in future?

you never know they may surprise us. Should be fun. I'd imagine it could be like that rooney street skillz thing.
