It's pretty awesome to have a Latin American Pope. (Y) He's also a Jesuit, which is a prevalent order in the region.

I like that he's a jesuit a lot, actually.

Don't like that he appears to have collaborated with the junta during the Dirty War.

Well it seems that his collaboration could have been to intercede to save the lives of two Jesuit priests who were working on social programmes in the suburb (barrio) of Flores (Orlando Yorio y Francisco Jalics). There's controversy on whether he directly denounced or indirectly warned them on the risks of their activities.

There's also controversy about his knowledge/involvment in the forced adoption by junta supporters/elites of children born from political prisoners, which is a much more charged topic in Argentina.

He'll be fine if he stays out of politics.
He is a supporter of the pro-Malvinas movement, which won't go down well in the UK.

Strange, Argentina couldn't be bothered with the Falklands until oil exploration started there.

I don't think the Pope can afford to intercede on behalf of Argentina - kind of defeats the uniting purpose of the papacy...

They've been interested since 1833, but they also assert that the British citizens there aren't a natural population (with some rational difficulty), since the Argentines were expelled, etc.

The question is more who is anti-Malvinas in Argentina. There have been some written exposes by prominent journalists and writers opening up discussion on the likely possiblity of never getting the Malvinas back.

Yes, we're very serious about our religions here on SG. I'm an "ethnic catholic"? I guess...

I'm interested in who is the pope, but I would never let a religious figure impact my life or listen to one.
